Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Complicated function code needed

    I have to have a calculation on my form that is like this:
    Gross Box= $1000.00
    Estimated Tax Box= "if Gross Box is 0.00 to 100.00 then this box is .181, if Gross Box is 101.00 to 205.00 then this box is .198, if Gross Box is 206.00 to 495.00 then this box is .203, if Gross Box is 496.00 to 600.00 then this box is .213, if Gross Box is 601.00 to 865.00 then this box is .218.
    Tax Box = Gross Box * Estimated Tax Box
    Net Box= Gross Box - Tax Box

    I perfected this function in Filemaker before using "IF Function" but I cannot seem to get it to work in A5V6. The code will go in to the Estimated Tax Box. The rest is finished. Can anyone guide me thru this problem? Thanks!

    RE: Complicated function code needed

    Estimated Tax Box= case(gross_box="100,.181,gross_box="205,.198,gross_box="495,.203,gross_box="600,.213,gross_box="865,.218)

    is as close as I can get given your conditions. What happens if gross_box" 865?

    I guessed what you wanted to do if gross_box was between 205 and 206, 495 and 496, 600 and 601, since you didn't specify.
    There can be only one.

      Kevin,

      Instead of using a calculation field, make a variable
      for the estimated tax. Then in the OnChange event for
      gross_tax you can have:

      gross_box = 100
      select
      case between(gross_box, 0, 100)
      estimated_tax = .181
      case between(gross_box, 101, 205)
      estimated_tax = .198
      case between(gross_box, 206, 495)
      estimated_tax = .203
      case between(gross_box, 496, 600)
      estimated_tax = .213
      case between(gross_box, 601, 865)
      estimated_tax = .218
      case else
      estimated_tax = .223
      end select

      The other formulas can then remain the same.

        Sorry, dyslexic this morning

        case(gross_box"=100,.181,gross_box"=205,.198,gross_box"=495,.203,gross_box"=600,.213,gross_box"=865,.218)

        transposed the "= in the original.

          RE: Complicated function code needed

          By the way, the appropriate if() in Alpha is

          if(gross_box"=100,.181,if(gross_box"=205,.198,if(gross_box"=495,.203,if(gross_box"=600,.213,if(gross_box"=865,.218,#)))))

          where # is the value to use when all the tests evaluate to false and the final false condition returns a value.
          There can be only one.

            Kevin,

            While for overly complex expressions it is often recommended to use a UDF, you should should be able to get by with calculated fields in your case.

            EST_TAX = if(Gross_Box "= 100,.181,if(Gross_Box"=205.00,.198,if(Gross_Box"=495.00,.203,if(Gross_Box"=600.00,.213,if(Gross_Box"=865.00,.218,0)))))

            TAX_BOX = Gross_Box * EST_TAX
            NET_BOX= Gross_Box - TAX_BOX

            Note that I used underscores instead of blanks within the variable names. That is a recommended but not necessary procedure. Secondly, your expression must assume that Gross_Box can never exceed 865. There is no estimated tax rate supplied for when the Gross_Box is, say, 900. If a rate does apply for such instances, put that rate where I have the zero near the end of my expression.

            I hope this helps you.

            Steve

              Thank you guys! It is exactly what I needed. Pretty much the same as in Filemaker, just different locations and functionality. I am implementing it now. I do really appreciate this.:)
