Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

FoxPro 2.6 Driver: download location ?

    Hi Guys,

We want to connect to some Alpha Five tables from the outside, and be able to not only read but also write in that tables directly from an .ASP page for instance.

I have searched the forum postings and found that this can possibly be done using an ODBC connection with a FoxPro 2.6 Driver.

However until now I have been unsuccesfull in trying to locate such a driver on the internet.
Can someone help me with this or maybe supply the driver directly ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as always.

    Kind regards,

    Marcel Onck

It should already be installed as part of Windows under the ODBC Data Sources control panel..."Microsoft Visual FoxPro Driver"

This is a free download from Microsoft's web site: "http://msdn.microsoft.com/vfoxpro/downloads/updates/odbc/default.aspx"

... be aware that the driver has some limitations... eg does not support CREATETABLE and some field types are not supported eg SHORT TIME

However... it does work quite well if you are very careful to design the tables appropriately in both apps .

            Aaron,

Is this information still current? Its impossible to define a odbc connection to 2.6 on WinXP SP2 because it forces you to upgrade to VFP 9.0. This odbc driver will not properly connect to Alpha tables. I am trying to do mailmerge using Word Perfiect with ALpha DBF as the source - is there another method?

Steve, your app may need a different approach, but WordPerfect can easily import Alpha's DBF files, and will convert them to mailmerge DAT files if you want. If you create a temporary DBF (containing the desired records) that has the same name each time, this becomes very easy for the user, though it does take a bit of training. -- tom

Sorry to show I am up so late, and you so early...

I'd have to 100% automate. The merge happens on a server, with a dozen people doing input, plus web input. I wonder if I can create the DAT files from within Alpha - say the user identifies a job they want merged, Alpha could create a set of DAT files from a query, and then use those DAT files as a merge source??

                  Steve,

If you users are coming at the data from WordPerfect, I should think it possible to build a WP macro that will open the temp DBF and convert it automatically. You'd use separate macros for each mail merge template, or do a bit of training (in WordPerfect) so the users can build their own mailmerge templates...

If you're trying to drive WordPerfect from Alpha Five, I don't know if this will work as easily. Haven't tried to do this. My users tend to be pretty proficient WP drivers.
