Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Wait for idle does not seem to work.

I have created a custom backup job that creates a zip file of data only. After it completes, I want to copy it to a floppy disk. Although I have inserted a "Wait for Idle" command between the backup script line and the copy script line, the copy script still executes before the backup script finishes.

Can anyone tell me how to make A5 finish one script line before it goes to the next?

The following code is the three script lines and the Xbasic generated by the three script lines.

RE: Wait for idle does not seem to work.

    Dick

One of the challenges creating a string of scripts is getting the timing correct. As you have seen, xbasic_wait_for_idle() doesn't always do what you expect, since "idle" may not be what you expect.

There are a couple possibilities you can try as an experiment from simple to more complex. The first is the one you tried. The second is to try another approach and use xbasic_asynchronous() at the start of the code.

A more forceful method is to run two separate scripts and do some action in the first that prevents the second from running until the first is totally complete. A relatively simple method is outlined in the help under "maximum stack depth exceeded" The problem with that method is that is stops the second script entirely. You just want it to wait. However, you can use a revised concept to absolutely force the second script to wait.

Split your code into 2 scripts. The first script has all of the code other than the copy to floppy.

The second script starts by setting the value of a global variable and then runs the first script. The first script resets the global as its last action to another value. Then you add a new command, wait_until(), to force action action to pause until the global value is set in the first script. Then run the copy code.

Here is an example of some of the code for the SECOND script that runs the copy

    dim global busy as l
    busy = .T.
    script_play("first_script")
' note, the LAST line in "first_script" should be
    ' busy = .F.
    wait_until(busy=.F.,.1,120)
' at this point, the script will pause until busy = .F.
' add the 120 to only wait 2 minutes in case the
    ' first script stalls

delete busy ' not needed anymore, so delete it
'now add the code to copy to floppy

RE: Wait for idle does not seem to work.

      Just a thought....

I believe each function must complete before the script will continue. If this is true, what about building the "script" as two functions. The functions could be included within the script or as global functions. (It really shouldn't matter but I wouldn't make them global unless they might also be called by another script.)

      Something like this:

MyBackupRoutine( "Whatever arguments are needed> )
MyCopyRoutine( "Whatever arguments are needed> )

      FUNCTION MyBackupRoutine as C ( "arg list> )
      ....
      END FUNCTION

      FUNCTION MyCopyRoutine as C ( "arg list> )
      ....
      END FUNCTION

I haven't tried this technique for something quite as complex as this but I think it should work.

By the way, yes, Jerry's method will also work. I just thought of the function idea before reading his so I thought I'd present it as a possible alternative.

Another idea to try. Use xbasic_wait_for_idle() after each and every sequence that kicks off a new process. You have multiple loops and sequences but only one xbasic_wait_for_idle().

Well how about that! I tried Cal's solution using function calls, and after fiddling with arguments a little bit, it appears to work perfectly. Thank you for your help.
