Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Oracle connection

Just installed Alpha Five V6 and would like to connect to an existing Oracle Database. Can anyone instruct me on how to do this or point me to a resource that could answer that question? Thanks!

    RE: Oracle connection

I see that no one has answered, to I'll tell you what I think I know.

Right now, the best way to link to a non-dbf source is to use the Web Application Server. It has good tools to link to non-Alpha sources using ADO/ODBC and Access tables. Of course, that means that you'll be producing web pages. So, if that's what you want, you're in decent shape.

These tools to link to non-A5 sources are being improved and incorporated into the next version of A5, which should be released soon. At that point, you will be able to very easily set up links to other sources for your desktop applications. This was demonstrated at the user conference this spring, and it's incredibly simple.

Others may have more to add, but I didn't want your question to go ignored.

    Hope this helps.

Currently, we have to Oracle clustered servers and a oracle replicate server. Where would you recommend we install the web application server? Thanks for your help!

I have no experience with the configuration you're talking about. Maybe Lenny or someone will jump in here.

If you're asking web server questions, I recommend their posting on the Web Application Server message board, not the version 6 board -- you'll reach a slightly different audience with better knowledge of related issues.

          Scott,

Depending on your needs, You can also create an xdiaogue form that
          directly connects with ADO.

In control panel, select Code, then New.
          Choose Script (USING XBASIC EDITOR)
Right click in the blank script and choose Genies...
          ADO Record Set...
          OR
          ADO Connection String...

              Scott,

The control panel is the main Alpha Five tab. You should see
a tab at the bottom left of the screen that says "Control Panel". You can also click the Window option from the top menu and chose Control Panel. However, if you are using the Alpha Five Runtime, the control panel is not available.
