Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Show Parent records only that match query on child

    Hi Everyone, I have searched and read trying to figure out if what I want to do is possible. Basically I have a customer table, Custno, Name, etc..... then I have a Jobticket table, Job#, Custno, Date, PO. Then I have JobDetail table, Job#, qty, description, price. Basically I have a form setup with a one to many link between customer and jobticket and one to many link between jobticket and jobdetail. On a form I have a list of customers in a browse, just the customer name, then a browse that shows all the selected customers jobs, and then another browse with the job details. I am able to select a customer, and browse their jobs, which works fine.
    However, I want to be able to search the job details and only show job tickets with that particular search criteria. Example, I select the company "ABC Co." it shows 5 job tickets, each job ticket can have multiple items. So I want to search for "Envelopes" and only show the job tickets that have "envelopes" in the jobdetail. If I make a set with just Jobticket and Jobdetail, and do a search like this, it works right, only parent records are shown that have "envelope" in the detail. But once you link in customer to jobticket, it doesn't work right. So I hope I have given enough information, I just want to know if there's a way to do what I want, without having to open another form. I think it's fairly simple, but can't seem to figure it out. Thank you so much for any help or advice you can give.

    Josh,

    Describing queries can be tricky at times. I'm not clear of your goal.

    You want to show ALL customers, but only JobTickets that include Envelope items.

    Or

    You want to show only Customers, who have Jobtickets, that include Envelope items.

    ???

    can you give us a sample dataset from your tables, and tell how you've got them linked together? This would make it easier for us to try to help you.

      open the form, and if you have the system toolbar at the top, just click on the query genie - you can easily specify the query to filter the child table for particulars, and it will only include parents whene there are children that meet the filter criteria - also, you can then save the query with a name, and call it from a button.

        Hi Tom, I have included sample tables and the form I'm talking about. As you will see, if you select a customer, it shows each job ticket, as well as the currently selected job ticket's details. I want to have a type in field to enter a search, say "envelopes" and only show the Job tickets that have "envelopes" in the job detail for the currently selected customer. I hope that clears it up. When I do a query like that, it still shows job tickets that don't have "envelope" in the details. So that's why I'm trying to figure out if I can do this.

        Thank you for your help.

          If you change the restrictions on browse2 to not allow enters, changes, and deletes and then make the browse not read-only, a user can then select a field on the browse but cannot make changes, etc.

          If you then add a button with the code

          :Lookup_Customer_Jobs:BROWSE2.quick_search()

          the user can filter the browse records on any field they like.

          For the life of me I can't see how to release the quick_search() without another button using the code

          Lookup_Customer_Jobs:browse2.Show_All()
          Lookup_Customer_Jobs.show_all()

          Maybe someone else will show us how.

          Is this anything close enough to what you want?
          There can be only one.

            Hi Stan, I see what you are saying, but that's not quite what i want to do. Here's the scenario: Customer calls me, ABC Co., wants to know how much their last order of envelopes was. So I open the form, select ABC Co. from the list, it shows me their jobs, now I want to enter "envelope" in a type in field and push a button to then query ABC Co.'s jobs for any jobs that have "envelopes" and only show those jobs for ABC Co. that have "envelope" in the job detail. I can do a query on it, but it still shows ALL the customers jobs, not just ones that have "envelope"..... If a customer has 50 orders, I don't want to see all 50 orders, just the ones that have "envelope" in the job detail. Hope that explains it a little better.
