Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Which button is clicked

    I need to create a script that will get the text from any one of 20 buttons on a form that has been clicked... I need to perform subsequent actions, using the text from the button label. I don't want to create 20 separate scripts, just one script that will determine the text of the button that was clicked by the user. Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance...

    RE: Which button is clicked

    Rich,

    Normally I would tell you to add an action script to the button's On Push event and assign the Text Property Value to a variable. Unfortunately when I tried this I received an error message. I reported is as a bug.

    In the meantime, you might want to consider using list of items in an Xdialog box. Check out Branching Examples in the help file.

      RE: Which button is clicked

      Hi Jerry!

      Thanks for the follow up. My problem is, the buttons on my form have their text (Label) set dynamically. The text for button one may be different tomorrow or the next day, based on data in a table. When the user clicks on a button, then subsequent actions are performed....

      If the buttons labels were always the same, this would be far more simple! I tried to use a this.text reference to get the string of the button text, but it didn't work. I think I need to use that EVAL function to have it evaluate this.text as a string, but not sure...

      Thanks for your input! Please let me know if you have any other ideas...

        RE: Which button is clicked

        Rich,

        Create a new action for the Button's ON PRESS event. You can create it in xbasic:

        'Get properties of 'Button1' in Form 'App_Employment' .
        DIM GLOBAL Button_01_Says AS c
        Button_01_Says = topparent:Button1.text

        Depending on what you are doing, you may need to create a variable for each button's text. I added the "01" in case this is what you need.

        It won't matter if the text of the button is set dynamically, it will use whatever the text is set to at the time the button is pressed.

        Good Luck,
        Jerry Gray

          RE: Which button is clicked

          Rich,

          Make sure you move the action to the top of the list. This will ensure that the text that is returned reflects what the text was when the button was pressed. If the actions of the button press change the text of the button, you would get the new value if the action was at the bottom of the list.

            RE: Which button is clicked

            I'm not sure which event fires the subsequent actions to which you refer but this script will get and display the object name and ".text" of the currently active object and the previous active object. The sctipt is not limited to buttons so activating a field is the same as pression a button to the script. May have the seeds of what you want.....

            active_obj = topparent.Active_Drilldown()
            ui_msg_box("",active_obj)
            label = eval(topparent.Active_Drilldown()+".text")
            ui_msg_box("",label)

            prev_active_obj = topparent.ACTIVEPREVDRILLDOWN()
            ui_msg_box("",prev_active_obj)
            prev_label = eval(topparent.ACTIVEPREVDRILLDOWN()+".text")
            ui_msg_box("",prev_label)
            There can be only one.

              Stan & Jerry:

              You both have provided great feedback. While both methods would give me the label of the object, Stan your method does exactly what I am looking for, because I am trying to avoid having to refer to the specific name of the object. I need the active button to return it's label... this is perfect!!! Now I don't have to re-write the script for buttons 1 - 20... One script can be attached to each button

              Thanks, both of you for your valuable input...

                Rich,

                To simply things even more
                1. In the form, create a session variable called
                Pressed_Button_text
                2. create a script called 'Store_Button_text' with one line

                Pressed_Button_text = this.text

                Then in each button you simply add
                script_play("Store_Button_text")

                Now any time a button is pressed, var-"Pressed_Button_text
                contains the text you need

                  Even greater! This is essentially what I have done, using Jerry's input as a starting point...

                  Thanks a million!!!
