Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Windows Scripting Error

    Greg:
First of all: make sure you do not have a virus or a worm in your system. That would be your primary concern, why?
The Windows Scripting Host (WSH) is a feature of Microsoft Windows operating systems that enables .vbs files to run in Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, and Windows 2000.

VBScript files are plain text files with a .vbs extension, that can be edited using any text editor, such as Notepad. They contain a set of instructions that are run when a user executes the file.

The Windows Scripting Host (WSH) enables users to automate tasks in Windows by providing access to the Windows shell, file system, registry, and more. If you are not using nor anticipate to use it, you might be better off blocking it or removing it alltogether as it is a target for viruses and worms.

Common worms are VBS.LoveLetter.A and VBS.NewLove.A , which enabled the virus writer to automate actions that ran a direct script execution without end-user intervention.

It is not unusual to get a message indicating that you need to install WSH after you install a new software, even if you have installed it previousely. To check to see if WSH is installed on your system:

1-From the Windows taskbar, select Start|Settings|Control Panel.
2-In the Control Panel screen, double-click the 'Add/Remove programs' icon.
3-In the Add/Remove Programs window, open the Windows Setup tabbed page. Select 'Accessories' and double-click.
4-In the Accessories list, find 'Windows Scripting Host'.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. What happens if you try the following in the interactive window?

      x = ole.Create("WScript.Network")

                    Greg,

I had the same problem. Download and install Windows Scripts. I don't know why we have to do this again when it was working before, but I did it and the problem went away. The web site is

                    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnanchor/html/scriptinga.asp

                        Re: Windows Scripting Error

I'm hoping I can revive this thread, which began in 2001 and appears to have been dormant since July 2005.

I've been running A5 v6 for two or three years now and hadn't seen the Windows scripting error message for a long time, but it has returned. It's identical to the screenshots posted by others in this thread, and like the others before me, I'm able to close the error dialog and proceed seemingly normally afterward. But I would like to run down the cause.

I haven't made any significant changes to my databases in at least 18 months. I enter new data, but that's it. No patches, no exotic macros -- I'm a pretty basic level user. I saw the comments from one user about possible viruses and/or worms, but I scan every file on both my hard disks religiously twice a week as well as running an AV scanner in real time, so I would discount that possibility. I use Windows XP with the SP3 release candidate installed. (No, I didn't notice this starting to occur right after I installed the SP3.)

There was a post in the thread by Howard Cornett in July '05 giving an updated URL where he said a download of Windows Scripting could be had, but it too is now out of date ("location cannot be found") just as the URL hard-coded into the initial error msg being generated by Alpha Five is obsolete.

Would someone help me try to troubleshoot this issue?

                        TIA. :)
