Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Field Rule question in Alpha Sports

The main SET in Alpha Sports is INVOICE.SET which links several tables. Invoice_header table is linked to CUSTOMER table and INVOICE_ITEMS table and several others. The question is:

I right click on the INVOICE set, select Edit Field rules (at this stage I can see all the fields related to the tables in the set including the INVOICE_ITEM table). I now choose a Field in the INVOICE_HEADER table eg the DISCOUNT field) I take the option to make this a calculated field and go the the Expression builder to enter a calculation based on a Field in the INVOICE_ITEMS table - the problem is that this table is not available via the expression builder. The only tables shown in the expression builder are the CUSTOMER fields and the INVOICE_HEADER fields and I do not understand the reason? In Alpha4 I used to be able to create calculations using all the fields in All the tables included in the set and I wonder how do I do this in Alpha5?

I assume that I can achieve the same result by making the calculations within a FORM but I find it simpler if I can place the calculation within the Field Rule in the SET.

    Thanks for your help
    Robert

RE: Field Rule question in Alpha Sports

Robert, it's been a long time since I worked with field rules in Alpha Four. Here, since the Invoice_items table is linked to the header table using a 1:N link, how would Alpha know which of the related children to pull a field value from ... for purposes of completing the calculation you're trying to do in the header table? -- tom

I have seen recommendations against using calculated fields in the table itself. I think that that you can create the calculations that you want on the form or report rather than in the table itself.
      Best of luck

So would you recommend that I use calculations of this type in the FORM or should I use LOOKUPC expression in the Filed Rule? Any preference?

        Thanks

Robert, cannot offer advice on this without know more about the calc expression you're trying to build, what purpose it serves, and how you'll find the correct field value from among all the possible candidates in the linked Items table records?

Often the solution involves determining whether the percent discount varies by item, by invoice, or by customer. Your initial post sounded like it varies by item, but you were trying to define a rule for the invoice instead.

RE: Field Rule question in Alpha Sports

The calculation involved is as follows:
I need to calculate the total number of parcels(Boxes) related to an order.

A.GRAND TOTAL BOXES field = in the Invoice Header table, this is a clculated field, A=total of field D

B.QUNTITY PER BOX field = in the STOCK record table, this is a constant figure in the Stock record table (usually is "6" or "12")

C.QUANTITY per line = in the Invoice Items table, this is the number of units ordered by the customer and entered by the operator

D.TOTAL BOXES per line = in the Invoice Items table, calculated field,D=C/B

              Thank you
