Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Script Schedule

    I am on a network with two computers, the database I created is active on both and I am sending a report every morning with script_schedule then restore to reset next day. This works fine, however it is sending multiple reports instead of just one when I have the other computer on, with the database active.

    On my main menu I have that the following in OnInit

    script_schedule("send_report","07:55",4)
    script_schedule("restore","08:05",5)

    I am sending the report using Alpha's e-mail client wIth a specific profile.

    RE: Script Schedule

    Is there a relationship between the number of reports that are sent and the number of times the Main Menu form opens (on either machine) ?

    You might want to alter your scripts so that the first time the script is run on a given day an entry is recorded in a table on disk. The script could then check that table when the next copy of the app opens. If the current date is in the table, the script can end rather than sending another report.

      Tom has zeroed in on the problem that you are having.

      Think of the script in terms of running everytime the main menu opens. It might be easy to think of it running at the database level and therefore run only once, but it's actually at the form level. So you could have it run multiple times on each machine, let alone once for each machine.

      I like Tom's solution because it allows for any machine to run the script and then once it's run, any other machine should be running it again.

      If you want to designate only one machine to run the script, then you'll have to add logic to check for the machine name or something that tells you what machine you're on. Sometimes that's a good option to have with a server so that the scripts don't interfere with a user doing data entry or other tasks.

        No, I don't believe there is any relationship. The main menu is left open on both machines. It runs in the morning prior to using the database.

          Ok. Time to give us the actual scripts and details on the table or set underlying your main menu form. You also might want to verify that you've attached the script to the OnInit event for the main menu form, and haven't accidentally attached it to OnActivate by mistake.

            RE: Script Schedule

            OnInit runs each time the main menu form opens from scratch. I the main menu form opens when the database first opens, OnInit will run each time the database opens, on any machine. If the user closes the app and opens it again (after lunch, for example) OnInit for the startup form runs again. If the user reboots after a crash and opens the database again the OnInit for the startup form runs again. This happens for each workstation on the network.

              RE: Script Schedule

              Tom, Thanks for your help with this. The script is in the OnInit. You were right, I only left one database open and this morning it only sent (1) report.

              script_schedule("send_report","07:55",4)
              script_schedule("restore","08:05",5)

              Script(send_report)
              body = ""%a%

              Attached is your daily activity report for Chromosomal Abnormalities and Treatment Outcomes.

              %a%

              email_send(",[email protected]","Daily Activity Report",body,"C:\Alpha_Data\asco\report_asco.pdf","","",.F.,"","","DLN",.F.,.T.)

              Script (Restore)
              script_schedule("send_report","07:55",4)
              script_schedule("restore","08:05",5)

                Thanks for your replies, I am not familiar with adding logic of this type to a script, however this sounds like the solution for sending daily automative reports on a network so only one report goes at a time. There seems to be a need for this. Could you tell me were I could find information with regard to this subject? Does alpha5help have any informaiton on this subject?

                Thanks,

                Mike

                  Michael,

                  It's really not that complicated. All you have to do is add
                  the following to the beginning of the script.
                  =============================================================

                  if api_getmachinename() "" "the_name_of_the_computer_that_runs_the_script" then
                  END
                  end if

                  =============================================================

                  That way, only the computer you designate will run the script.
