Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Iterating over arrays & collections

    Bit of a dim newbie question, but I can't see anything in the docs or archives.

    What is the accepted Xbasic idiom for iterating over the values of arrays and collections?

    I can see a couple of ways of hacking it, but nothing as elegant as the iterators in, say PHP or Python.

    If Alpha is reading this, might be a good idea to add a section about this to the Array section in the docs...

    Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but there is tons of stuff on both Arrays and Collections in the help files. If you are using the CHM file, type either term in the index and hit enter. There's a lot there.

      I finally found the FOR EACH construct.

      It's rather well hidden in the docs...

        Well, I wouldn't exactly say it was hidden...all you have to do is go to the index and type "For Each" :)

        We also have the *for_each() function which will iterate over arrays as well as strings.

          Aaron - it's easy to find it if you know what you're looking for!

          I think it's pretty much standard in manuals dealing with arrays to have a section on how to iterate over the values.

          My suggestion would be to add a new section to the Arrays and Collections chapter of the Xbasic Reference giving examples of the different approaches.

              Thanks for listening. It's just a suggestion - but I do think it's an omission from the docs that's worth tidying up...

                RE: Iterating over arrays & collections

                Hello Aaron,

                I like to use the *for_each() function as it is very very fast compared to the 'standard' for each construct. But I have not been able to use it on pointer arrays with a character property, such as:

                dim va[5] as p
                va[1].name = "Larry"
                va[2].name = "Sue"
                va[3].name = "Toby"
                va[4].name = "Bob"
                va[5].name = "Mary"

                vList = *for_each(x,"Dear "+x,va[].name)

                Can we use *for_each() with pointer arrays ?

                Thanks,
                Jim

                          That makes sense, but I would not have thought about that syntax.

                            I would not have thought about doing this either, pretty neat, might be some other uses for this.

                              If you look in the most recent release notes, you'll see a note about this...Cian added this feature when he initially wrote *For_each(), but neglected to inform us about it until just a couple weeks ago. :)
