Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ADP payroll software and ODBC

    Hi,

Is anyone using Alpha 5 v. 6 to link via ODBC to ADP payroll software?

ADP uses a Centura SQL database, and I would like to like to a Centura SQL database with A5 v. 6 also, but I am having some trouble with the ODBC link.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Hmm. The grammar checker must not be working. "grin"

That should be "like to link".

A5v6 does not have the ability to link to ODBC data sources. You can use the ODBC Import Genie to import from a data source though.

        Lenny,

I am completely confused. (not an unusual situation, though).

        From Alpha's web site:

ADO / ODBC Support Need to access live data that isnt stored in Alpha Five format? Not a problem. With ADO and ODBC you can now use Alpha Five to view, edit, and modify data in virtually any format. Connect to MySQL, Oracle or MS Access databases and tables. Even MS Excel spreadsheets can be used as a live data source. No programming required.

        Am I misunderstanding something?

The Web Application Server can use ADO/ODBC data sources. You can also build Xdialogs that use an ADO/ODBC data source. But you cannot link to an ADO/ODBC data source and have it appear as a table in your control panel for general use. What specifically are you trying to do?

Click the Get the details link right after the text you quoted above for the details.

RE: ADP payroll software and ODBC

            Lenny,

Using A5 v. 4.5, we are successfully able to copy tables from our Centura SQL database into native Alpha tables and write reports and do many other useful things that our $30,000 plus software cannot do. There are two disadvantages with that setup, though.

First, the data in our Alpha tables is static. I update the Alpha tables once a day, which is usually sufficient, but it is still outdated very quickly.

Second, many users have the A5 v. 4.5 runtime version, which does not allow them to update the Alpha tables, so if they want a report that is "up to the minute", they must get it from me.

Finally, it would be nice in some cases to modify or add data to our SQL tables, but it is not absolutely necessary.

My hope is (was?) that version 6 would allow us to get data live from our SQL tables so I would not have to update it manually, and so the users with runtime could run reports without having to get them from me.

We are using Centura SQL, and while I can access it with A5 v 4.5, I cannot seem to access it with A5 v 6.

            Thanks for your help.

RE: ADP payroll software and ODBC

If Centura SQL supports ODBC or if there is an OLE DB provider for it, then you can write Xbasic code that reads and writes to it.

Refer to Using ADO (ActiveX Data Objects) with Xbasic.

And make A backup of your ADP tables before you are going to experiment with Xbasic. Better is it to experiment in an offline (not in production) ADP environment.

                    Lenny,

Hi. I tried the dialog box, and it works well.

                    Now, for the next step:
Can I take all of the records in a table (ODBC data source) and perform a function on all of them, like an operation on an A5 native table?

                    Thanks.

You can manipulate the data in all records, but it is not going to be as easy as running an update operation. You would have to use the code generated for that dialog as a starting point to write a script that
                      - opens a connection to the data source
                      - retrieves the existing data
                      - does an update on each record
                      - closes the connection
