Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Deleting drop down list items

In A5V6 build 1555 2051 I am unable to delete a drop down list item from a field. I can replace it with a new item, but I can not leave the field blank. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

RE: Deleting drop down list items

I just tried the experiment and had no problem with user defined list item entries. I could remove an item by deleting it (in Properties), making sure that the line ending CRLF was also deleted. Is this what you were using?

I checked my field rules and the rules are set for allow any value.

        Thanks for the idea

            Edward,
I should mention that this is happening in the browse mode as well as directly in the table entry mode.
In the form mode I am able to delete the item.

The field rule for the drop down is referencing a table. When I remove the option of "display as a drop down list", I am able to delete the data in the field.
I use the delete key to delete unwanted items. I am not sure what you mean by "deleting it (in Properties), making sure that the line ending CRLF was also deleted".

I have checked some other tables and have some that work as before so it could be something in my structure.

If you mean do I need to have a drop down list, the answer is that this is the most convienant way for me to select the field info that I need.

RE: Deleting drop down list items

Gabe, this is what I have under Data entry in the field rules for the field.

                  Required Not required
                  Mask Style No mask
                  Auto advance Not checked
                  Default mode No defaults
                  Skip Blank
Position cursor At end of text

I have yet to fully understand the position cursor field. This seemed to work in A5V4 but since then it is bizarre. It changed in V5 and it changed again in V6 and it did not get any better for me.

                    Larry:
In the field rules, under Lookup, check the following boxes:
User can enter new records to lookup table
User can edit records records to lookup table
Now you should be able to leave the field blank.

RE: Deleting drop down list items

Gabe, this does allow me to delete items, but I loose the drop down list that I like. I can click on the arrow on the right to display the records in the table however this is an additional step that is annoying.

The "display as a drop down list box" is what I prefer. I had this in V5 and I want it back in V6. It works in some of my browses for the same table but not in all. I tried duplicating the browse and building a new browse with the field in question and still it will not allow me to delete the data in the field.

I just noted that I can delete the field entry if I highlight it and use the cut funtion but the delete key will not work.

Under the Lookup tab, Auto popo up: choose pop up on enterance and that step will be eleminated.

Gabe, there is no difference if I set it for "popup on entrance" or "do not automatically popup". ???

If the display as drop down box list is not chosen, I end up having to go to a list and select the item.

After a few more hours of trying stuff, I discovered that the space bar will delete items.

I am now back in business where I can use the drop down list and delete entries in field using the spacebar.

Thanks for your help on this item.

Edward, I am trying to use a drop down list based on a table to fill a field. The problem I was having is that the delete key would no longer delete an item in the field. This happened when I upgraded from V5 to V6.

I now have discovered that the space bar will delete field entries.
