Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Question Before Purchase

Will A5v6 Unlimited 3-User Runtime have all the components of a single user license & the Runtime ?

    #2
    RE: Question Before Purchase

No, it is just the runtime. The 3 user runtime product page states:

The application developer will need a licensed copy of Alpha Five in order to create the application(s) that you wish to distribute with the Alpha Five Runtime.

      RE: Question Before Purchase

Thank you for your reply. I found the product list, and in it there is a bundle A5v6 License and Unlimited 3-User Runtime. Sorry I asked before looking through the product list.

May I ask, how long have you been using Alpha X v X ?

        RE: Question Before Purchase

When Alpha first hired me in 1995, version 2 was the current release. But I wasn't in product development at that time so I did not use it in-depth like I do now.

          RE: Question Before Purchase

I am considering purchasing the bundle license + runtime.
I will be evaluating the trial version hopefully by the end of this week. I have been an Access developer since version 1. My interest of course is in the RAD for WEB development. Have you used or developed in Access before Alpha ?

Joe, for what it's worth, Lenny doesn't really develop with Alpha; he develops for Alpha. He's basically responsible for developing the Web App Server. (Yes Lenny, I know much of Alpha is developed with xbasic but that's not the same as building apps for end users.)

I did some Access development in the past but must admit that I did very little with web apps. I looked at it a bit but never really did anything with it. (Maybe that in itself tells you something.) I also played around with Cold Fusion for awhile and built one small app with it even though it never actually made it to final publication on a website.

From what I recall, Access wasn't really a web app, it just had the ability to publish pages. The Alpha WAS is more like using Cold Fusion to build a real web app BUT Alpha has the tremendous advantage of the web components which are much, much, much faster than hard coding and require very little HTML expertise. In some cases you may find that the web components don't really do what you want. In that case, you will have to revert to hard coding so you would want to know HTML. It all depends on what you want to do.

"i" Joe, for what it's worth, Lenny doesn't really develop with Alpha; he develops for Alpha. He's basically responsible for developing the Web App Server. (Yes Lenny, I know much of Alpha is developed with xbasic but that's not the same as building apps for end users.) "/i"

Actually Cal, I'm the first to admit that while I may work for Alpha and know quite a bit about Xbasic, I'm one of the last people you want to ask for help with your form, browse, report, etc. I condsider myself an expert in a subset of Xbasic only. While I have done a little bit with the desktop side, I have never built a full desktop app in Alpha.

Thank you Cal; we have shared some of the experiences in development using Access and other tools as well. From what I have seen so far Alpha will get me on track for RAD in WEB app dev. Have you used any of the add-on components ? If so, what have you discovered that work best for you ? Is it possible to develop a component within Alpa or is it necessary to use a third party tool ? I do appreciate your opinions. TIA Joe

                  RE: Question Before Purchase

                  Lenny,

Please don't take my last comments as a shot at you or your abilities. It certainly wasn't meant that way.

                  Joe,

By "addon components" I assume you are not talking about the web components. (I've done very little with the web components so far. The major app I'm working with was started back when the WAS was still in beta then nothing was done for a long time and now I've finally got a working version. When it was started there were no web components to work with so there are none in the app even now because it would mean too much rework.)

As to the other addons, I'm not sure I can say what works best because that usually depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Of course, all the addons I created are just fantastic!

As far as I know, all the addons were created completely within A5.

                    Cal,
Please, not at all. I really appreciate all your comments
and thankful for your experience with Alpha. I just submitted my PO for the A5V6 & 3-User Runtime bundle. My initial project is to build a web app using Sql Server 2000 and possibly a few external Access databases. Additionally, I developed electronic forms for PalmOS and soon to add a PocketPC version that use Access 2000 as the backend. I plan to add this connectivity as well via Alpha.

                    Many, many thanks,

                    Joe
