Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Application Closing

    Tom, I use the same system you do, and I just noticed that something has changed. I'm using 2046. Despite that I have cancel() in my master menu's canexit event, with no toolbar and/or menu, I can close Alpha using the "X" at the top right of the screen from my Master Menu. I also just noticed that I can open another form with the same canexit code, also with no menu or toolbar, and I can also close Alpha from there, too.

      RE: Application Closing

      I did some testing and find this change was introduced in build 44. If you go to a build prior to this the standard behavior is there, but after that it no longer holds, and the "X" immediately closes Alpha!

              I haven't seen this behavior, but the fault may lie here, since I use my close app button out of habit. Sorry. -- tom

                    RE: Application Closing

                    a new build (2047) addressed this issue, but introduced a new one - if you have the canexit event for the first form that opens set to cancel(), a5.close won't work - have reported the error to Alpha

                        well, phooey.

                        here's a simple app I made - the button named "script" has a simple one line command a5.close() that won't close it with 47, but will with 41 - see if it closes on yours. am using xp pro sp2, piv 3.2.

                        extreme thanks for dealing with the original issue so quickly!!!

                          There is nothing in the zip file. Also, if you have the web server running, try the same test with it not running.

                            Martin

                            By the way, I just tested an app originally built in A5V4 that has a cancel() on the CanExit event for the main menu in some test code to verify exit. However, clicking the "X" closes A5 without running the test code. I added a message box to the CanExit event as the first line

                            ui_msg_box("","CanExit")

                            to test if the event is firing, and the message never appears. Apparently, the event is not firing. When I set the trace window to track events, CanExit was never listed although OnExit did fire.

                              Jerry, if especially the first form that opens has cancel() in the canexit event, and you are running version 42 thru 46, you can incorrectly exit using the "X" - thus, like you mentioned, it is apparently not firing. But if you use 47, it fires but also disables a5.close().

                                no, it does not disable a5.close()

                                a5.close() still fires.

                                but you have a form open that has

                                cancel()

                                on its CanExit event.

                                since the form cannot close, a5 cannot close.

                                if you change your canExit event on the form to

                                q = ui_msg_box("","close?",UI_YES_NO)
                                if q = ui_no_selected then
                                cancel()
                                end if

                                then you will see that when you press the button that has the a5.close() on it, the question appears and if you select yes, then a5 closes.
