Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help for a novice user

This program is way to complicated for someone who has no familiarity with programming. Does anyone know how to create a simple A/R-collections database that is easy to use and work with??? If so, please help.

    Hello Jeff,

I wish I could solve your dilemma in a paragraph or two, but it is not that easy.

""This program is way to complicated for someone who has no familiarity with programming.""

You do not have to have any familiarity with programming to be successful with Alpha Five. I have seen tremendous applications built with little or no programming. But you do have to have a general familiarity with a computer and an insight and understanding about how to use and approach a problem with Alpha Five. You desire to solve a business need (an A/R app), by using a sophisticated tool, Alpha Five. Steve Workings, a well known and top notch Alpha developer, often uses the analogy of wood working. Anybody can buy a table saw. Some end up doing great bodily harm to themselves, many tinker and create very useful objects that they take great pride in, some create works of art.

IMHO, you can be successful with Alpha Five easier than with any other development environment. That is not to say that it happens overnight.

"" Does anyone know how to create a simple A/R-collections database that is easy to use and work with??? If so, please help.""

This is a tough question to answer. It is like asking a room full of auto mechanics if anyone can build a car. I would hazard a guess that all most all of those who frequent these message boards can create a very workable A/R application. How to transfer than ability and understanding to a new user is the real trick.

My suggestion is to start. Work through the tutorials, start with some of the sample applications shipped with Alpha Five. Take a look at the third party training materials and classes. Check out Dr. Peter Waynes web site and books (www.learn alpha.com). Read the Alpha newsletter (www.imakenews.com/alphasoftware). And, as you have already done, ask questions here on the message board.

If you feel that this is beyond what you want to do, or your time frame, then Id suggest partnering up with an experienced developer and either work collaboratively or hire it done.

I wish you all the best,

    Jim Chapman

RE: Help for a novice user

      Jeff -

You can create very impressive applications without having to write procedural code with Alpha Five. But you do need to have some experience working with working with objects in a graphical environment. If you've ever used a report writer, or done antying where you had to drag objects on a form, right click and set properties, you can create applications in Alpha Five. It is by far the easiest environment I've ever tried to create database applications. And this message board is the best I've ever seen as far as people offering help - real, professional help that gets results! If you need to go through a learning curve to do what you want, I honestly feel that taking the time to learn Alpha Five is a worthwhile way to go. Good luck.

        Hi Jeff,

Believe me. There isn't any other database development program out there that is easier to learn and use, has more features, has customer support that even comes close, or a forum like this one where everyone pulls together to solve issues for each other. Just work thru the tutorial. You'll be amazed. Building applications in Alpha is kind of like having sex, the first times a scare, but after that, you just want to keep doing it ;)

          Hi Jeff,

The great thing about Alpha is that you cannot break anything. It is good that you have a project in mind, that give you a target to aim at.

Start with pen and paper. Write down the names of all the fields you want, that will help you to know what the data is each field should hold.

Study Alphasports, read all the notes on each form. Experiment and practice, dont worry if you make a mistake, nothing is cast in stone. Experience is the best teacher.

Come back, do a search or look in FAQ. We are all here to help.
