Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Will this work?

Hi, Folks!!!I am 10 days into A5v6 and am very excited by most of what I have seen so far. I have been known online as A4BEST for over 10 years now and only time will tell if I have to change my moniker.
A little backround is I developed the A4 app that has been running a 6Mil/year company since 1993. Since 1995 not 1 problem requireing a call to Alpha for support. Not a single day down for any problems. Yeah it required a few index updates along the way but by and large BULLETPROOF. Can't say that about Peachtree that is doing the accounting!
I already have about a hundred ????????? , But I will start with 2. 1st one easy I hope 2nd one going to require some thought.

1} L. mask. Does it work or not? I have searched and found some feed back on this but the ?, is it a bug or not, is not answered. Mid Inital field C 2 , type in a m and it converts it to M but no period after. I can see a couple of work arounds, But like a few others have expressed I am frustrated when things do not work as they are supposed to.

answers yes it does not work get over it and move on
no I have a problem that might be solved with
    more info

    2)Here's the Will this work?
What I want to do: My company is a manufacturer of very high precision aluminum extrusion. Die drawings are one of the most necessasary documents to be automated. I want to create a field containing the die # (C 10). On any form I put this field on I want to make a button to place next to it that when "clicked" will find the dwg and display it on screen then have an option to print it if required.

How hard is this going to be to do?
What type of file type must the dwgs be "stored" as for A5 to access them?(all options please)
Not looking for code (YET) just your thoughts on what I should keep in mind going about this.

Ok I said just 2 and I see a lot more "?" than 2, sorry.

I want to thank all of you supporting this board. I can see that I will be here a lot and hopefully one day able to contribute answers instead of questions.

    RE: Will this work?

    Hello Jeff,

""2)Here's the Will this work? .......How hard is this going to be to do? ""

I would simply reference the drawing file in an Alpha table field, then open it with the associated program. This is very easy to do and Action Scripting has a specific action to do this very thing. If the associated program was not present on the systems that you are running Alpha on, then that is a different matter.

Alpha will display a jpeg or bitmap file directly so these two would be your only choices if you wanted to embed the image directly in Alpha. Take a look at the "Image File Reference Control" in the Alpha help file.

I'd make sure I had a program on the system that would display the drawing in its native format (and is associated with it) and then just open the drawing file within Alpha, which will launch the associated program for viewing and printing.

    Good luck,
    Jim

Thanks Jim, thats kind of the answer I was hopeing for.I am assuming that with xbasic or scripting that I will be able to manipulate the viewing program to find and display the correct file.

      Again A big Thanks!!

        RE: Will this work?

        Hello Jeff,

        I've got a demo at:
        http://www.alphasoftware.com/support/tech/alpha5/tutorials.asp

Named "run an external program" that will demonstrate how to do this. These tutorials are buried, you can't get to them unless you know the address.
