Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to create a "remarks" box in a form?

We use Alpha Five for a customer database and invoicing. I want to add a box in a form in which the user can enter dated remarks about the customer currently being viewed, preferably with an automatic date, e.g.

4/1/2005 Customer says he's not interested in upgrading.

Each remark would appear on a separate line.

The objective is to see an up-to-date history of customer contacts.

I'm sure I could find this myself, but I don't even know what it's called! Can anyone here help?

    RE: How to create a

    Hello Michael,

I've done this before with memo fields, where the existing entries cannot be touched but you can add new entries. This begins with a memo field placed on the form. You make it read only. Now you would need to code via xbasic, bringing up a text object, I'd consider using the a5_memo_editor(), for the user to enter a new comment. Upon saving, your routine would date stamp it and probably insert it into the current memo before the other entries, depending on whether you want the comments displayed inverted or not. You can also do this with a rich text field, but this can bring extra complexities because of the rtf embedded coding.

    Good luck,
    Jim

Thanks, Jim. I don't know xbasic, but I suppose this is a good time to learn, eh?

        RE: How to create a

        Michael,

I would suggest creating a separate table to store the comments in. You would have a unique identifier field for the table, a linking field (the customer ID), a memo field, and a date field.

For the date field I would suggest in field rules:

        Data Entry Tab
        default value simple expression
        date()

        set default at start
        skip = .t.

Then create a set to base your form on, one-to-many with the new table as the child.

On your form, place an embedded browse for the child table. Set the browse as read only and add a button to 'add' the memo field data. Since you would be using a memo field, I would suggest the 'add' button open a separate form, or an xdialog to enter the new record into the memo table. This minimizes any corruption issues.

        Hope this gets you started.

        Good luck
        Cheryl

          Hi Michael,

Have you looked at Add Text to Memo Field or Add Text to RTF Memo Field.

This is very powerful as you can a date and even add a User Name if you have got security set up.

I have tried the "Add text to memo field" but when I am creating the script it tells me "Object Name is Not Valid" even though the object name is right there on the drop down list! How can this be? I tried this with a memo field called NOTES and then another memo field I named MIKE. Both times, same result!

              Memo field on forms

              Michael,

I agree with Cheryl that for robust application it might be good to have the notes distinct, but I tend to not do that. I have appended an example that I use that is very simple, by adding a Memo field to your Table associated with your Customer Form. Check it out. I use this alot. Hope it helps.

Mike, your example helped me out, too -- question, however: Can this be changed so that any of the lines can be edited? Thanks

                    Not sure what you mean

                    Shawn,

You wrote: "Can this be changed so that any of the lines can be edited?"

I am not certain what you are asking, as there are no edit locks in this example. Maybe reword and detail, and I can get what you are refering to. Thanks

                    Mike W.
