Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Form RTF Paste Doesn't Work Properly

    i am a new user, 3 months into 5v6.

problems with 5v6, build before 3-11-05, form rtf feature.

    1. cannot paste entire form from word into a 8.5 x 11.0 rtf.
finally, after hrs of trial and error, wordpad allows this in ascii.
    2. after pastin ascii form, i cannot see the text after double clicking to edit the information.

    3. how does one copy forms layouts into 5v6? one item at a time.

What happened when you tried? Was it too large to fit? Try cutting and pasting smaller sections. (Try cutting and pasting into another Word document also, and see if you get what you started with.)

Can you create rich text differently, or at all?

Attach a screen shot, as I'm unclear what you're trying to do.

RE: Form RTF Paste Doesn't Work Properly

      thanks for the reply.

i am taking forms created in word from site:

      www.dshs.state.tx.us/mch/fee/forms.shtm

      and creating rtf forms.

      1. i create tab form.
      2. then i create a rt text field, 8 1/2 by 11.
      3. then i type a few letters to create a text area.
      4. then i double click to edit, at this point the rt edit screen comes up however you cannot see the text. therefore i cannot edit the form
      5. after i click on the tab form. i can see the form i pasted but i cannot edit it becuase i cannot see the text after i double click to edit.

looks like this a bug in the program. will download the lastest update and test it tonight

      TIP

was able to copy the entire form by pasting the word form into note pad then copying the note pad verision into the rt text area, that saved a lot of time pasting in sections, what a relief when one has to do many forms.

RE: Form RTF Paste Doesn't Work Properly

Those word files may have a doc extension, but it's possible they're saved in html format. Otherwise they wouldn't open up in the browser. So when you're copying from the document on the web page, you're probably picking up some html code that's not visible. Pasting into notepad probably strips some of what copied that shouldn't. Saving the documents in Word again might strip out the html. Might not. I don't have the patience to learn Word beyond what's absolutely necessary. I've saved some word files in html, and it's been a big waste of time - strange things happen. Sometimes I cut and paste between Word files using the "Paste Special" options to strip text of junk code. Sometimes Rich text is just too Rich. Is there any reason you need to maintain the formats? You might consider a background jpeg of the form with the fields over top it, if you're trying to duplicate the look of a form. I haven't tried that, it's pure theory.

Another possibility is to watch the size of your tab under the field. I created an 8.5 x 11 image field, and because the tab was also 8.5 x 11, it was too difficult to place on the tab. I thought I had it but it was too close to the edge and was actually on the page behind the tab. Or something like that. Now I generally start out with different colors for different objects so I can tell easily. If the field is white and the tab is white it can be hard to see if it's where you think it is.

Check the color of the font, make sure it's not white on white.

Try saving the form, closing it, opening it up again. Sometimes the graphics seem to hang on redraw. Reminds me of the old days, when TSR's and many programs didn't "let go" of the memory when they closed. It seems to me that I've opened too many forms at once, and Alpha starts to flicker or act strange. Shut down some windows and all is better. I also suspect I get better results when I save often when designing a form. I changed my default to save on view or exit, as I lost changes easily otherwise.

Try to make the same rtf field NOT on a tab. Do you get the same result?

Also, you're sure you actually created the field, right? I find it helpful to go from typing in the field to the selection tool, then to clicking on another field to deselect the field I was just in. Then I can click on the field and right click to change the properties of the font, for example. Hope that's not too simplistic, but I found it took a little getting used to before I realized sometimes I think I'm clicked on one thing when I'm clicked on another.

I'm also a little confused by you "can see the form you pasted" - I'm wondering if you've pasted a subform?

This is the blind leading the blind here. Better than no answer at all, no? "g" I'll go read a bit more on rtf fields and check back later. Let me know how it's going.

I am a long user of Alpha 4 and Alpha 5 versions 4.5 & 6. Although admittedly not an expert of any measure.
I have discovered the same problem and the best approach should be to delete the RTF object and replace it with an OLE object but.....
weird things happen to the case, clairity and page format of the copied Word DOc. Try it and see.
I called Alphasoftware and they encouraged me to send in a bug report, I did. Hopefully this item can be addressed, bug or not. I will post a result.
