Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Auto refresh shadow not quite working

Has anyone else experienced anything like the following:

A client running a Windows 2000 server network with XP workstations is reporting (and I have seen it) that the auto refresh of shadow DBs is not working quite right, at least on workstations with the runtime.

The problem I have witnessed is that the shadow updates but is flaky unless one exits it and comes back in. By flaky they mean anything from an opening form opening but freezing to the Control Panel showing when the opening form is closed (another form is supposed to open). The latter I witnessed myself. Needless to say, this is not how it is supposed to work. They have not gone to build 2044 yet but the problem is there with 2042. These kinds of problems were common with v5 but I thought v6 fixed them.

    Ray,

My understanding is that you have always had to exit Alpha after a refresh of the shadow database before running the updated version. This applied to v5 and seems to continue to apply to v6, unless anyone knows better?

But surely that is not how it is supposed to work, is it? If it were, it should automatically do just that.

It will refresh and open but as Ray has found out Alpha often behaves flakey without restarting. I run a multi user application at three sites covering around 60-70 users and we always recommend a restart after a refresh.

Maybe someone on Alpha's tech support could comment please?

Mike, I would recommend reporting it as a bug. I only have maybe 30 different workstations that log on, (not all at the same time,) but they are using 98/ME/2000/XP on the workstations, and I'm not having that problem.

refresh shadow was completely rewritten in v6.

i am surprised to hear that you have experienced a problem. the tests we have run work OK.

if you can send me a case that duplicates a problem, we will fix it.

RE: Auto refresh shadow not quite working

Unfortunately, for the specific example I have seen, on my deveolpment machine I do not experience the same problems that I have witnessed on my client's network.

Also, they do not experience the problems when creating a shadow that overwrites the old one. I believe it may only happen when the auto refresh is set based on a new build of the app. But of course that is the feature they would love to be able to take advantage of.

RE: Auto refresh shadow not quite working

We have done some more testing this afternoon using the auto refresh on v6 and we are not experiencing the problems we see with v5 where our app does not always open correctly.

Looks like I have jumped to the wrong conclusion! ...oops!

We are still running v5 at our client sites whilst using v6 to develop the release of our next app which we have begun trialing in house. I guess the excitement of the new v6 features is getting to me!

                    Mike :)
