Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: YTD Totals

    Martin,

I believe the problem is that Keith is looking for the ending date to come from the date value of the record selected from the embedded browse.

    Gabe,

I do not think your reports are what Keith is looking for either.

I believe I understand what Keith is looking for but I have yet been able to find the correct expression to achieve those results. Perhaps I can explain it so that one of you can find the proper expression for him.

Basically, I believe what they are trying to do is to be able to select any pay week listed in the embedded browse, show the detail pay (gross, tax, net) for the specific week selected .... AND show the YTD totals for that week.

If we select week 2/28/2005, the weeks detail shows correctly with the report design the way it is now. The ytd totals need to be the total of that date 2/28 and all dates prior up to the beginning of the year 01/01/2005.

If we 'show' the date selected and all others prior to that date we could use a running total or even a total for the fields. But the end user only wants to see the detail of the specific date.

I was thinking that it would probably be easier to add ytd fields into the payslips table as calculated fields, but I have not been able to get an accurate expression that will total from the current records date backwards to the 1st of the year.

Hopefully one of you more experienced with xbasic .... and date field additions can come up with the right expression.

      RE: YTD Totals

      Gabe,

Thank you for your effort, unfortunately this is not what I was looking for.

I do not know how the Tax system works in the USA but in the UK the avarage worker pays their Tax on what we call Pay As You Earn. This means some Tax is taken from your wages each pay day. It is important to show on the payslip how much has been deducted from this pay period but also to show the Total amount deducted to date.

I like the idea of between as this gives a starting and end point to calaculate within. It should be posible to reprint an employees wage slip for any period and therefore show all the additions and deductions totaled to that date.

In my example I have shown the YTD totals on the form, I would like to show the same Totals on a Report, with only the values for the last period.

I hope that explains it a little better, I do appreciate your help.

OK Cheryl, here you have it: point to any row, then click: "Cheryl Report", Vola! I could further simplify it, I just want to make sure that's what you want.
You mentioned a week, but Keith states a month on the form: I did it for the month, if you want a week, I cuold modify it!

          RE: YTD Totals

          Keith:
I think we are getting caught up on definitions:
YTD, invariablly means all amounts paid up to today's date. If it's figured based on a Calendar year, then YTD would be from 1/1/2005 to today's date. If configured based on a fiscal year, that would be from the date from the first date of the fiscal year up to today's date.
The two reports I generated for you, do exactly that.
Evidentlly what you want is a bit different: you want to go one year back from from the pay date. The file I zipped "Cheryl" does exactly that.
I do not know what else could you possibly mean by YTD or what other flavors you wish? Anything is doable, if I know what exactly you want.

            RE: YTD Totals

            Gabe,

You are still showing all the data from the date selected to prior. We want to only show the detail for the date selected with the ytd total as of that date ... without showing all the detail from the prior dates.

This is a pay stub. A pay stub shows current wages detail with ytd totals as of that date. Your reports are giving all details which is not what we need.

            Thanks

              RE: YTD Totals

              Gabe,

We are looking for the current ytd totals. The problem with your reports is that you are showing ALL the details from the date selected and prior. We do NOT want the details for all the dates, just the ytd totals. The detail in the report needs to be for the pay date selected ONLY as that is the pay stub.

              Does that help clarify?

              Thanks

                    Gabe,

You are getting closer. The start date does need to be the first of the current calendar year, in this particular case it would be 1/1/2005 but should not hard code that as there may be multiple years stored in the table.

I want more than what you are showing this time. I still need to see the 'current selected date' details.

Say I select the 2/28/2005 row in the embedded browse. I want to see the gross, tax ded, and net pay for that specific date in the detail ... with the ytd totals for gross, tax ded, and net from 1/1-2/28.

                    Does that help?

                    Thanks

I appreciate your efforts in trying to assist with this issue. But if you read the posts clearly, I have not changed what I have been asking for. I have said the same thing every time.

This is a PAY STUB. A pay stub shows the detail for the current pay date, with YTD totals for the current calendar year.

                            Thanks

You are now showing 'all' the pay period details again. I only want to see the details for the pay date selected in the row. You are also showing the ytd totals beginning from 1/1/2004 which should be 1/1/2005 if I select a 2005 pay period and 2004 if I select a 2004 pay period.
