Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Append Problem ?

    Hi All,

I have a table with 65,000 records. It has several indexes on it. I am trying to append 15,000 records but I keep getting error messages saying there is a problem with the Indexes. I have re-built the indexes, done a compact but still the same message. The interesting thing is that there is no set paten as to the number of records appended before the message pops up.

Whilst I have been able to append the records to the table with the Indexes removed, I cant expect my customer to do that.

    All suggestions welcome.

    RE: Append Problem ?

    Keith,

Sounds like there is something in the append operation that might be messing up the indexes somehow? Just a wild guess. Is it possible to run this append on a different table to see if you have the same results? Or perhaps there is a record or records in the table that is conflicting somehow?

What does your append operation do? Any chance you can attach the offending table/append operation so we can play around with it for you?

    Good luck

      RE: Append Problem ?

      Keith,

      1) make a note of the specific error message(s) then search this forum for causes

      2) investigate the possibility that this is a manifestation of a data error in the transaction table. Cut the table in half, append each half with indexes. When you hit an error cut the troubled half in half again and continue winnowing down. Perhaps there's something amiss in your transaction table that's triggering the fault. In my experience data errors in the transaction table are a common source of errors while appending or importing. It's often wise to validate the transaction table records first, before running an append. Validation routines would check for empty fields, and for field values beyond allowable ranges.

      3) study the indextag expressions. Are they simple or complex? Can they be evaluated in all cases, even where key fields are empty?

      4) if any of the indexes employ filtering expressions, remove those tags only and try your append again.

As you can see these are not solutions themselves, but suggestions for getting to the bottom of your problem.

        RE: Append Problem ?

        Tom,

Thanks for getting back to me. Please see attached for error message.

I duplicated the master file to a new table, removed all indexes, checked field sizes and ran Append, no error message.

I can only assume that the message is correct and there is a problem with Indexes. I have followed rectification instructions but that makes no difference.

I know what I am doing but I know my customer will not.

          Keith,

In your new table, try adding your indexes back one at a time. You said you removed them all, it may only be one index that is causing the trouble.

          Good luck

Keith, you tell us nothing about your index tag definitions or the presence of blank field values. I think Cheryl's suggestion is a good one, since it will help to narrow down the search for unusual transaction table records.
