Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    menu code help

    The following code works on a button on a form, but not as a menu item. Why not??

    ------------------
    dim global vpatient as c
    dim frm as p

    if(is_object("Fullname"),vPatient = fullname.text,vpatient = "")

    vpatient=alltrim(vpatient)

    frm = obj(":Client_PlanT")
    if .not.is_object(frm)
    frm = form.load("Client_PlanT")
    end if

    frm.index_set("fullname")
    frm.find(vpatient)
    frm.show()
    end
    --------------

    I don't want to query the form as I have a browse at the parent level for navigating, and want all records to show, but to find the same record that it left.

    Thanks

    Tom

    RE: menu code help

    Maybe a context issue with your addressing of the fullname object?

    "When event code is played, Xbasic sets the object path to be the object that is handling the event. For example the default object path for the OnFetch event on form Customer is :Customer." - I'm not sure the object path of the fullname is in the path of the menu. You might try..

    if(is_object(":formname:Fullname"),vPatient = :formname:fullname.text,vpatient = "")
    There can be only one.

      RE: menu code help

      Hi Stan,

      No luck. Because the same menu is used on all forms, I tried substituting the following per your suggestion:

      if(is_object(":A_FORM_CURRENT:Fullname"),vPatient = :A_FORM_CURRENT:fullname.text,vpatient = "")

      Any other suggestions? It worked fine in V4.5, I'll never get caught up in time for the conference!! ;-)

      Thanks

        RE: menu code help

        For starters, you are using the if() function incorrectly. If the first parameter is true, the second paremeter is returned, otherwise the third is returned. It does not execute those expressions as you seem to think. What I belive you are trying to do is:

        vpatient = if(is_object("Fullname"),fullname.text,"")

          if(is_object(eval(":"+A_FORM_CURRENT+".Fullname"),vPatient = eval(":"+A_FORM_CURRENT+":fullname.text"),vpatient = "")

          I hope.

            Good catch by Lenny! I wasn't looking at that aspect because you said it worked in an earlier version.

            if(is_object(eval(":"+A_FORM_CURRENT+".Fullname"),eval(":"+A_FORM_CURRENT+":fullname.text"),"")

            should work as well.

              RE: menu code help

              We are getting close, but not there yet.

              Here is my menu script - I changed forms in case something was unique to the other form.
              -------------

              dim global vpatient as c
              dim frm as p
              vpatient = if(is_object("Fullname"),fullname.text,"")

              vpatient=alltrim(vpatient)

              frm = obj(":Client_Meds_T")
              if .not. is_object(frm)
              frm = form.load("Client_Meds_T")
              end if

              frm.index_set("fullname")
              frm.find(vpatient)

              frm.activate()
              frm.show()

              end

              ---------------

              The above results in filling the variable correctly AND opening the form, BUT it does not find the "fullname".

              Hhmmmmmm.

              Other ideas?

                  RE: menu code help

                  Tom,

                  Your problem might be in the order of your script. When working with menus or toolbars, you need to establish what the is_object is before you start placing values into your variables.

                  frm = obj(":client_meds_t")
                  if .not. is_object(frm)
                  frm = form.load("Client_Meds_T")
                  end if

                  vpatient = ("Fullname",fullname.text,"")
                  vpatient=alltrim(vpatient)

                  I have not tested this, but it seems logical that you cannot get the text value of the object on the form until after you know what the form is.

                  Good luck

                    Cheryl:
                    That might be true if you are working with session or layout as opposed to Global variables which you could define from anywhere and before opening the layout.

                      RE: menu code help

                      Gabe,

                      fullname.text is an object on a specific form, not a global variable. How is it possible to set that value to your global variable if you do not know where that object is?

                      If we use it in that context without placing it after the form is loaded, then it would need to be changed to something like: formname:fullname.text or frm:fullname.text

                      Obviously I could be wrong, but with the work I have done in custom toolbars, we need to know what the is_object is before we can use the fullname.text alone as it is. Toolbars and Menus are definitely different than buttons on a form.

                      Good luck

                        You are correct speaking in a general sense, but in this particular instance the expression Tom wrote does not set the variable vpatient to fullname.text unless is_object is true.
                        see the expression:
                        vpatient = if(is_object("Fullname"),fullname.text,"")

                          Cheryl and Gabe,

                          Still won't work.

                          Cheryl, the variable is filled OK. I've tested that.

                          Gabe - with your change, the form opens OK, but it does not execute the frm.find()

                          There is something unique to Menu scripts that I'm just missing. I will be obvious once someone points it out to me.

                          Who will be that someone? please... buy you at drink at the conference...

                            Tom,

                            Try:

                            frm.index_primary_put(fullname) and
                            frm.fetch_find(variable)

                            I am assuming of course that you have the index set in your table and that the form you are loading is based on the same table that the fullname field is in.

                            Thanks

                              Tom:
                              ""vpatient = if(is_object("Fullname"),fullname.text,"")
                              vpatient=alltrim(vpatient) ""

                              I am not sure if this would work or it\f it is a correct syntax but it's worth a try:
                              vpatient = if(is_object("Fullname"),alltrim(fullname.text),"")
                              or maybe:
                              vpatient = if(is_object("Fullname"),+eval(alltrim(fullname.text)),"")

                              or leave the same expression and eleminate: vpatient=alltrim(vpatient)
                              My point is you trimmed vpatient but not Fullname and as such you do not have a match.
