Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Move Database to Another Folder

I've been working with and building on the same application since many many versions ago.

Unfortunately, I thought I was being smart at the time and created two related databases under different directories (actually there were 3 or 4 different directories, but I've cleaned all but one of them up).

It works fine on my desktop machine which hosts the databases, but - as everybody knows - doesn't work well via network optimize.

Are there any tools or special procedures available in V6 that will allow me to 'migrate' everything from one directory to another without re-building tons of saved operations, etc?

Seems like there might be some low-level search and replace function that will rename and/or remove references to the different sub-directory.

    John,

Search on file extentions ie adb, ddm etc. Understand which holds what. Then you can copy from one folder to the other. As an experiment make a third folder and copy into that and test your application.

You can easily move a database after zipping it. Take a look at Zip Database

        RE: ZIP AND MOVE ADB

Sorry, but I am missing something again.

My task is to create a new ADB for 2009. named 'bag_lady_2009'.adb.

I have many tables and sets, calc field rules, operations, etc in a current adb named
        'bag_lady_2008' .

I tried zipping the 2008 adb and restoring it in the empty 2009.adb. What I got was a second file named 'bag_lady_2008' and a still empty 'bag_lady_2009' . In the restore process I manually entered the 'target file' as 'bag_lady_2009.adb'

The purpose and necessity is to leave the older (2008) adb in place with all existing data and commence using the new (2009) adb, after removal of carry over records that are no longer applicable to 2009; such as bank deposits, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable and other data. I can remove most of this data using 'operations'.

I have also tried to backup the 2008 directory to a memory stick which forces the filename on the memory stick to 'bag_lady_2008.zip', then, renaming the file on the memory stick to 'bag_lady_2009.zip' and trying to restore it to a newly created empty adb on my laptop with the same name, but that doesn't work either.

Surely there is a simple way to do this, as I can in Alpha4.

Another hurdle to jump over in my learning of how things are in alpha5 !

What am I missing this time ??

Also, I assume it is possible, without any negative side effects, to have multiple adb
files, for subsequent years; 2008 - 2009 - 2010, etc with exactly the same dbf and set names on the same drive and in the same network.

Hoping for a solution prior to 01/01/2009!!

        Regards, John Linley

Re: Move Database to Another Folder

          Hi John,
I have seen threads very similar to what you want to do...and invariably the question will be asked of you, "Why?". The general way to do this is simply to filter out records you do not want to display by the year. I suppose, depending upon the application, this could be extremely simple or possibly difficult to do.

A search should find a few of these threads that I know exist and do remember solutions being given.....I will have a short looksee to see what can be found....

EDIT: here is one search that has relevant info. It has a thread even that has a function to do as you intend if wanted.

            Mike:
Thanks for the response. Will take a look at these links some time tomorrow.
Hopefully, my ancient brain will be able to comprehend whatever instructions are contained therein and my ability to manage files, an essential task, will occur.

Thanks again. I do appreciate the message board and all the help received to date
from Alpha5 wizards who are so willing to come to the rescue.
