Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Printing Problem

I think it was after installing the most recent V6 patch that I began having what appeared to be sporadic problems printing. Im not sure if V6 was the culprit, but I figured this information may help somebody along the way. I have no printer connected directly to my printer, but I print to two printers via our network.

    Captured via
    LPT1: HP Deskjet 970
LPT2: HP Laserjet 4+ (an oldie but goodie)

I found that I was having trouble printing to the printer that was captured to LPT2, the HP Laserjet 4+. After a clean reboot and prior to running V6, I would have no trouble whatsoever printing to this printer from any programs. Once I ran V6, I could not print to this printer from any program including V6. Only a reboot would resolve this and the problem would re-occur as soon as V6 was run again.

The windows error message: Spool32 caused an invalid page fault in module kernel32.dll at 0187:bff7a1a5

I considered that something in my database was causing the problem, so I loaded V6 and closed it before running any database. Same problem.

I tried recapturing the printer to the same port but that did not work. I then began looking around. In Spool Settings I noticed that DISABLE BI-DIRECTIONAL SUPPORT FOR THIS PRINTER was selected. For kicks, I selected the ENABLE option and this resolved the problem - I can now print to this printer again from within V6 and from other programs.

Funny thing, I just went back in there to retrieve accurate information for this posting and notice that both the DISABLE and ENABLE options for bi-directional support are dimmed and not selectable.

Anyway, I just wanted to post this information in case it was that last patch for V6 that caused the problem and if anybody was having similar troubles that they might have something to refer to.

    RE: Printing Problem

    Please help...I can print all day with no problems as long as I do not load Alpha Five Version 6 after a reboot. Once I load A5V6 and try printing, I receive the following printing error message;

SPOOL32 caused an invalid page fault inmodule SPOOLSS.DLL at 0187:7fabb636.

...and I can no longer print anything without rebooting. At that point, I can print anything to either printer on the network as long as I do not load A5. If I only load A5 and close it without opening any databases, problems still exists.

I also notice that once a printing problem fails, A5 will crash and will not reopen without a reboot.

    OS: Win98
A5V6, Build??? I can't load A5 now until I reboot. I'll post back build number after a reboot.

    Thanks!!!

        RE: Printing Problem

I typed the error message that I receive from this failure into google and found an article at MS's website:

        http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=159873

The error message that I receive is: Spool32 caused an invalid page fault in module spoolss.dll at...

This article indicates the problem only occurs on Win95, however, A) I have Win98 and B) I believe this problem only started after I installed the most recent build for A5V6.

        I'm perplexed. Any ideas???

        Thanks,
        Mike

          RE: Printing Problem

Well, I think I resolved this.

Im not sure that this can be, but I think that the latest release of V6 did not like an old printer setting on my PC. It was for a dot-matrix printer that I used to print to via our office network. This printer was only used by Alpha Four. I have not printed to this printer in about a year since I began printing to multiple trays on my HPLJ4+ in its place. I deleted the printer from my PC and it seems V6 now prints with no problems.

The funny thing is that I NEVER printed anything to this dot-matrix printer from any version of A5. Why now a problem, I do not know.
