Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5Doc

How do you get a Trial period of A5Doc? Would like to see it work.

    Thanks

    RE: A5Doc

Easy, when you run it for the first time you are asked if you want to register or start a trial period.

What Alpha currently distributes is the version that shipped with A5v5. In the past couple months some incompatibilities with A5v6 have shown up. It works OK for some people, not for others. I am just finishing, probably today, a new version for A5v6 that
    1. fixes the incompatibilities with A5v6
    2. provides an installer specifically for A5v6
    3. adds new features.

I still have some new features to add, but I will get a build posted so at least people will not run into problems. So at that point, just download the A5Doc for v6, install, open one of your databases, right click in control panel and select Addins, A5Doc to test it out.

    Bill.

      Bill,
Where do I go to get the 'DownLoad'?
I can download it in A5V5 but can not find it in A5V6. On the Alpha 5 site you can buy it but no 'trial period'.
      Thanks

        RE: A5Doc

Good point. I'll have to get with Alpha about that.

Since A5Doc was automatically distributed with A5v5 it was not an issue before.

Phillip, If I remember correctly after you download it you can use it on a trial basis. You could also try Cal's AIMS App Analyzer, you can find this at:

Elke I know that Cal has some very good software, I use his Baskup system, and it is good. But Cal does NOT like to print, and I am from the old school and like to print Doc. That is why I wanted to look at A5Doc. I wanted to see if A5Doc Print's.

            Thanks

                  RE: A5Doc

A5Doc for version 6 is now available for trial / purchase! Jeannette in Alpha's customer service should have it set up soon. You can download it from http://www.partec.net/a5doc/download.htm

People that bought A5CDoc with A5v6 will get the new version of A5Doc at no charge. Jeannette is working on automatic notification procedures for this.

If you have been using the older A5Doc from A5v5 then you will need to purchase a new key from Alpha Software for the new version.

The new version adds documentation for letter and label layouts. All fields on layouts, including fields contained in rich text objects are documented with object name, field name and object type. It also documents the xbasic representation of Saved Operations.

With the new features, all objects and their component fields on each control panel tab are now documented.

                  Bill.

                    Bill,

I just downloaded the v6 version. Is something wrong or is Print Preview no longer going to be an option? Often times a preview is all I need from which I can copy and paste snippets, etc.

Click the Settings tab. You can choose a default of Preview or Print.

Under Settings I can find no such option.

As is often the case, I am lost! Since I had the v5 version installed under v6, could that have fouled thigns up? As I recall, it did not work and I just switched to v5 if I needed a5doc.

                          RE: A5Doc

The settings tab has not changed from a5doc v5 to v6. There are 4 options as shown in the attached image. The problem might be that you are not getting to the a5doc main menu. Right click in some white space of control panel and select Addins, A5Doc.

In a5doc for v5 you need to scroll down to see the Settings tab.

Most people have had issues in using the older a5doc in recent builds of A5v6, so that is one reason there is a new a5doc.

                          Bill.

Bill, thanks for the "Right click in some white space of control panel and select Addins, A5Doc." It had been so long since I had any reason to go to the A5doc settings in v5 that I had totally forgotten where they were. I stupidly thought you meant they would be in the A5v6 Settings. Then again, I am not sure that was all that stupid of me (gotta try to save face here!).

                              Hi bill

I used the demo for two days and now purchased the license. After uninstalling the previous version and installing the lastest version, it does not show as an add-in anymore

                              I am using Win2000 Prof and A5V6.

                              Any suggestions

                              Kind regards,

                              Peter
