Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Why doesn't this work?

Can anyone tell me why the table lookups for the "Patient tracking" table do not work? Particularly the study lookup field gives a Variable not found.

I also get an Unexpected Error and alpha crashes when I try to import anything into A5V6 anyone else have this problem?

Your patient tracking table is in a different directory than the rest of the files and is not included in your zip. That might also explain why the lookups fail.

Can you then explain why it imports into A5V5?
And I have never had this issue until resent.

Why not do as others have suggested, and supply all the necessary files?

All of the necessary files are in the zip file above.^

I just downloaded and checked it.

                  I beg to differ.

The zip file you uploaded here does not contain the Patient Tracking table or its dictionaries.

There is a table in the zip file that's not yet part of the database. It's called Patient Tracking Temp Table. I did not think that was the same, since the name is different and it doesn't have any field rules defined for it at all.

If this database contains important data, I suggest you backup everything carefully before doing anything. Then...

I suggest you find the folder where the Patient Tracking table is found. Then copy that table and its dictionaries into the database folder. Then open Alpha Five. Drop Patient Tracking from the database. (Do not delete it.) Then "Add" the Patient Tracking table back to the database, from its new home in the database folder.

                    RE: Why doesn't this work?

While I see what you are talking about, there is no other patient tracking table. If you run the DB you will see a Patient Tracking Table that is populated with data, and has field rules asinged to it. The error I get is with the Studies field lookup in the field rules. And when I try to list the lookups for the filed it doesn't show the data in the tables. I hope that makes since.

Even if you rename the studies temp dbf the table lookups still don't work.

When you import text into a new table does it name it with a temp.dbf name?

Also can anyone explain the question of why does my A5V6 crash everytime I try to import CSV files?

                          Sean

What Tom and Stan are explaining is visible in the attached image.

The table patient tracking is in a different folder than the other tables.

Notice that the control panel is in detail view mode.

Then you can see the actual directory location of the files that hold the tables/sets.

If you do this on your machine, you'll notice that the directories are not the same.

Your other option is to use the Alpha 5 tools menu option and zip the database from there. It'll then put all of files and directories that are needed in the zip file.

Personally, if possible, I keep everything in one folder. Notice I said try......

Is the file that you are trying to import the patient tracking.xls?

I used excel and saved it as a 4.0 file. You'll have to work on the phone number formatting, but it imported just fine.

Sean, I believe you. there probably is only one Patient Tracker table. But you don't are assuming it's physically located in the same folder as your database.

I suggest you look at the database folder with Windows Explorer. You won't find "Patient Tracker.dbf" there.

Here's the thing. You can "add" a table to a database from any folder on your hard drive. However, "adding" the table to the database doesn't physically move the table to the database folder. It just establishes a connection between the database and the table, whereever it might be located on your hard drive. Later, when you try to copy the database, it's easy to overlook the tables that sitting outside the database folder. That's what you did, or so it seems to me.

Have you tried my suggestions yet?
