Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can't Reset Index

If I do a query and then delete the records where the Query shows "0" records, I cannot get out of the query by pressing a button on the form to reset the index. I have to close the form and reload to be able to reset the index.

Have you tried Ctrl-I to pick the index manually?

Can you show us the button script?

      RE: Can't Reset Index

The button code was created by action scripting.
'Set the index to : 'date owed' in current window.
      topparent.Index_SetExplicit("Dateowed")

As you requested I went ahead and did a Query and then deleted until I had zero records. When you go to zero records the Change REcord ICON is highlighted and when I did the ctrl-I the index did change, the Change Record icon highlight was gone but I was stuck on the record that was deleted. V6 would NOT allow me to page up or down or do anything else. I had to close the form, reload and the last record that I deleted was now gone.

      Thanks

        Phillip:
Before setting the index, put the following in your script:
        t=table.current()
        t.query_detach_all()
If you created your script in Action Script, add the above as Inline xbasic.

Gabe, Same problem as described in a previous thread using Ctrl-I, the form freezes and you have to close the form and reload...

I am not sure I undertand this part: if there are no records "0", what are you deleting??

              RE: Can't Reset Index

Imagine you have a query of records that you want to delete (maybe 3 records) You do a ctrl-d for record 1, then 2 and then 3. After deleting the third record is when the query goes to "0". This is where the problem occurs. The screen freezes, the # of records in Query on lower status bar says "0". and you cannot get rid of the display for the last record you deleted.

I hope that better explains what is happening....

I don't see that behavior here using the default form for a single table. If you're working with a custom form that's based on a set of tables you'll need to describe it for us. Even better, post a working copy of the database.

                  RE: Can't Reset Index

Yes it does and also shows why you have a problem.
You see simillar situations when you reach EOF, Heap stack error or something like that. I believe(that's my theory) each time you delete a record, alpha updates and displays the iindex. As you delet the last record, alpha goes into this heap stack error.
A better way to do what you want is: mark the records you want to delete, change the index to show all records then delete marked records the set the index.
Alternatively: if your intention is to delete all records that are diplayed by that index: instead, use the index as a filter to delete these records.

Philip, this sounds like more video display adapter trouble to me. Have you had that kind of issue on your machine before?

                      RE: Can't Reset Index

Tom, when this occurs you cannot use the pgeup or down keys to move to the next records. It is simple to duplicate. Enter some fictious record, do a query on that record and try to delete while you still have the query on...see if it happens with your system.

                      thanks

                        RE: Can't Reset Index

Ok, I see it now. When the last record is deleted from the current query the form goes into ENTER mode. The problem is solved by clicking the ShowAll icon on the toolbar. I suggest you add that action statement to your script before the action statement that changes the index.

That I can do, but I think that by selecting a new index should do the trick.

                            Tom:
It seems that there is a discrepancy between what happens in your screen and Phil's:
                            He says the unit freezes!
In your case, you are still able to do show all() and get out of the index.
This seems like a catch 22 for Phil:
If he deletes the last record, the unit freezes, he won't be able to do show all().
If he shows all before deleting the last record: he will have a mix of records that meet the index criteria and those that don't.
                            Gabe

I'm not sure what the docs say, but I'd be surprised if the "tbl".index_primary_Put() method is permitted while the table is in ENTER mode. If you check the xbasic generated by the action script I'll bet you find that they use this method.
