Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    set field values

Why can't I use a calculated field that exists on a form in the "set field value" script on the same form?

    RE: set field values

    Deb:
"b.You can:"/b" if the calc field does not reference the field you want to set values to. It would be simply setting the field value to an expression (the same expression used in the calc field)
"b"You can not:"/b" if the calc field reference the field you are setting values to because you will create an indefinite circular re-calculation. In other words: the calc field is trying to evaluate based on the other field and the other field is trying to evaluate based on the calc field !! a mexican stand-off !!
As a side note: I noticed you are working on a real estate application. I have developed a rather comprehenssive app for real estates managment and would like to aopmare notes with yours.

        RE: set field values

        Gabe,

Thanks for responding to both my messages on this topic. I know what a circular reference is and this is not the case for this equation. When I go to set field values action script I don't even get the choice to use a calc field. There is no way to select from the calculated fields on this form. Don't know if this matters but the form is associated with a set versus a table.

        Set structure is:

        Properties
        -- Owners
        -- Rentals
        -- Charges
        -- Payments

If you are using action script:
one of the choice is to set field value ot an expression: insert your expression here. or, if your expression has a name put =expression name

            RE: set field values

            Gabe,

My application deals with rental management for vacation properties. It does reservations for guests, functions for deposits and payments, invoicing for maintenance, weekly cleaning reports, owner statements,...

My husband and I owned the business for 10 years. Before we took the plunge and bought this business on Hilton Head Island, we were both gainfully employed in the computer industry. In a previous life, I did programming, systems analysis, installation, tech support, management...

We started developing this application with Alpha4 for just reservations. When we upgraded to Alpha5 we added the other functions and got rid of old Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheets that were being used for things such as Owner Statements. It's a pretty tightly integrated little system.

Overall, Alpha5 is a tremendously powerful application. Nothing else like it on the market (no way ACCESS can do this stuff). On the other hand, the complexity can be overwhelming. My frustration occurs when something as simple as setting a field value can take hours and hours to make happen. Reporting is also a mystery in many ones. The use of sets versus tables adds the first level of complexity but in my application they are truly necessary. I've got at least 6 different views of my data using sets. Reverse sets are necessary to solve 'print current record' problems when child tables are involved.

I could go on the "yes" I'd like to compare notes some day. Thanks for your time and energy on this last issue.

              Gabe,

The calculated field does not reference the field I want to set. When I try to set it to the expression I am told the expression is invalid or incomplete. But it is not -- it works.

Wow, the clear air and the scenary should help you figure out any expression!

I only say that because in my app I am able to do all these calculations and reports for eac owner and each property etc with no difficulty. I guess you have to get in the "mind" of alpha to understand how few little things work. Few subtle things could cause you to go around in circles and end up frustrated. I am always hesitant to call anything a bug though! I have yet to report one bug! I always try to see if I have any bugs in my head first !!
I really think you should be able to figure this calculation easily, just take a walk along the beach or: zip your db.

                    Deb,

I just tried and was able to do it in Alpha Sports.
Created a new field in the invoice header (TOTAL1)
Opened form, created button with the following:

                    DIM SHARED vtotal AS n
                    vtotal = topparent:Total.value
                    topparent:Total1.value = vtotal

Just make sure the field you are attempting to set is large enough to handle the number. I recieved the error "Property Not Found" when the field was not large enough.
