Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Long merged documents?

    Long merged documents?

I am attempting to merge fields into a lease that is five pages long. A5 appears to be able to accomodate only about 2-3 pages in a form letter. Seems to stop at 24 inches long document. Is this indeed the limit for a form letter? If yes, then is there a way to link letters together?

    RE: Long merged documents?

I have a leasing database as well. You'll need to break the report into two or three reports and print each report. It occurs to me that subreports might solve the problem of having to do this, so maybe worth considering. For our system, however, having LeaseConsumerP1_2 and LeaseConsumerP3_4 works just fine. Provide the user with a single "Print" button and they'll hardly know the difference.

Thanks for pointing this limit out, didn't know. For your long documents try:

      1) create a macro in Word that launches the merge
      2) Create an Alpha script that exports the merge file to a text file and launches Word with the command line switch that starts the merge macro.

This is essentially what I do for a major merge project (although not with Alpha and its Word Perfect).

        Hi Dick,

One thing you mention is that you are using letters.

I think if you use reports (reports tab) you may get the desired results.

I have many letters that are longer than 5 pages. It is not necessary that a rich text object is as large as the text that you enter into it. Just make sure that the properties for the object are set to "Allow growth when printing"

I am curious as to how you did this. I have a five page form I would like to use. Yet, you can only use 22 inches to set up so how did you lay out five pages in 22 inches? Thanks,

                Steve

                  RE: Long merged documents?

It has been several months since I looked at this, but my recollection is that you must use rich text in your document, and you must check the box that allows the text to grow (as suggested in Elke's message above). Then, as you enter text, you will scroll your window up and down the text, thus enabling you to enter a document that is longer than 22 inches. I entered an apartment lease merged with my tenant names that is 6 pages of 8 point font with no problem. Hope this helps.

                    RE: Long merged documents?

                    Thanks Dick:

Dick's solution works with both reports and letters. Create either and set up an RTF field and check off the property that allows it to grow. Once that is complete you can cut and paste any pre-exisitng document in there and just add your fields as needed. This enabled me to reproduce a personnel evalaution form that looks no different from the original except that I can now manage the data.
