Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How Do I Find Query?

    How Do I Find Query?

I have a form that whenever it is opened a query is generated (Inv_num;.T.). I have searched everywhere (field rules, indexes, form properties, events....etc) to try and find the culprit that is requesting this query and I cannot find it. Any suggestions on how to find what is requesting the query?

    Thanks

Is the query being rebuilt each time? how do you know?

Are the filter and order expressions blank on the the filter/order tab of form properties ?

How are you opening the form? If it's from a button push, did you define an OnPush script that sets the filter and order for the form being opened?

The query description you post suggests that the form is displaying all records (filter is .t.), sorted in order by Inv_Num, ascending. Sounds pretty normal to me.

RE: How Do I Find Query?

"Is the query being rebuilt each time? how do you know?" I can delete query and when the form is reopened the query is back. You can tell that the query is being rebuilt because of the status bar in the lower left corner. The biggest issue is the time it takes to generate the query, it slows the display of the form.

"Are the filter and order expressions blank on the the filter/order tab of form properties ?"
Order expression has the inv_num but nothing in the filter.

"How are you opening the form? If it's from a button push, did you define an OnPush script that sets the filter and order for the form being opened?"
The form is being opening by a button. I have checked the onpush and any of the action scripting and could find nothing to generate the query.

I have an index defined for the inv_num. There is no need for this query that is being generated...

RE: How Do I Find Query?

The order expression in the form properties directs Alpha to run the query, despite what you said in the opening post.

However, LQO should kick in to obviate the need for building a new query list. Alpha should be able to use the index.

Without being able to see your database I'd guess there's a slight difference in how the index is defined and how the ordering expression appears in form properties.

        What haven't you told us?

Is form based on single table?

After form opens, do a Ctrl-I. Do you see both the query and the index? are they defined the same?

Have you tried rebuilding the index from scratch? i.e. deleting it. closing alpha. then building it.

          Tom

I think this is that same issue we ran into recently with another thread.

Even if an index is there, a form with the order defined will generate a query.

The same thing happens if you use action scripting to open a form and set the order.

          See attached script.

To use the index, use action scripting or xbasic to set the index in the onactivate or oninit event of the form, or on the event that calls the screen.
