Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Script Spawning(unexpected behavior)

I am attaching a txt file with 2 scripts in it. One is a company entry in Xdialog, The other is a Contact entry in Xdialog. On the Company enter i have a button that saves the newly entered company and is supposed to launch the contact entry script... But i get some error about a variable not being found, I think i know what is causing that.

What i can't figure out is why when i click the ok button to clear the error box, it continues to load the contact script as a blank page, when if you run ir seperatly it runs as intended??

Any help tips, advice (besides scraping the xdialog hehe) are always welcome. You guys are a great resource for newbies like my self. You dont get told this enough, Thanks for all you do!!!

it would be helpful if we could actually run your scripts to see where they generate an error.

since you did not attach the tables that the scripts reference, we can't run the scripts.

it would be better if you posted the complete database with the necessary files so that someone could download the files and then just run the script.

I placed it on my webserver so you can DL the entire project.

i have the file, and i have made some edits to some of the scripts that are looking for text files that don't exist on my machine and I can open the 'masterview' form, but there are no instructions on how to duplicate the bug.

what do i do, and how do i recognize that a bug has happened?

                RE: Script Spawning(unexpected behavior)

Once masterview is open,Click on the button near the bottom named New Company, fill in all fields except the not and the drop down with bogus info. Then clik the button that says Save & Launch New Contact. You will see the error immediately. Once you click ok on the variable "page_1" not found error box it will load the New Contact dialog Blank.

                  RE: Script Spawning(unexpected behavior)

i have looked at your scripts now, and it is hard to say what is going on. it would take me a long time to try to debug them.

it it clear from looking at the code that you have written that you are a very good programmer, but I believe that in this instance you have gotten yourself into a huge mess with a script that is much more complicated (and therefore difficult to follow) than need be the case.

what you want to do is pretty simple.
you want a dialog to collect some information.
then when the user clicks the 'save and continue' button, you want to create a new record in a table and then open another dialog to collect more information.

this should be a very simple xdialog script.

you have used code that it looks like started out in 'learning xdialog' that is meant for use in a 'genie' style xdialog. but you are not using a genie style xdialog and hence your code is much more complicated.

if this were a problem that i was working on, i would start over. you can use a lot of the existing code for the xdialog layout and the code that saves the data to the table. but you don't need any of the code in the define_pages() and show_pages() function.

in other words, try to keep it very simple.

you might want to start out with something extremely simple that just prompts for the 'company' name.

fyi. the problem about the variable not being found in your script can be solved by changeing

                  script_play("ContactEntry")

                  to

                  script_play_local("ContactEntry")

script_play_local() plays a script in the same variable namespace as the calling script. so if 'page_1' is found in the parent script it will also be visible in 'contactentry'.

script_play(), on the other hand, plays a script in its own variable namespace. so local variables in the parent script are not visible. only session and global variables are visible in the script that is played.

Thank you for your time in examining this. I'll take your advice and start over keeping all my validation code ect.

I agree my code is a little hard to follow without comments. That never was one of my strong points.
