Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    V6 & Win98 SE ->?

Anyone successfully loaded V6 on a Win98 box? I can't on my ThinkPad and I'm out of the V6 installation business with several clients.

I'm getting missing DLL error messages referring to DLLs that appear related to WIN 2000, WIN Server 2003, NT and XT -- NOT Win98. There errors cause V6 loading to abort.

In particular, mprapi.dll and samlib.dll are two. I placed a copy of mprapi.dll from a WIN 2000 box in Win98 System32 folder which cleared the first error. But the samlib.dll error suggests linkage with foreign registry values and I can't get around this one. I have a feeling that if I can solve the samlib.dll error there will only be more DLL errors to come.

There is at least one other user who encountered these errors with no apparent resolution. Any help out there?

Do you have the latest version to load or an older version that needs to be patched after it is loaded?

John, I've been running V6 on Win98 SE since September (currently using 2036, but it has run on all builds since then). It is working on my desktop and laptop, as well as my son's computer - all 98.

curiously, I looked for both the DLL files you mentioned, and neither is on my computer! I'd suggest you contact Lenny at Alpha.

        Al -
I have an early version that needs patching...released prior to the time of 98 compatibility, I'd guess. Or, should I say I hope. I'll confirm in this thread one way or another. Thanks for the good thinking.

          Bill -
I hope you got your install AFTER 98 compatibility was announced!
I'll follow your good suggestion and contact Lenny.

Download a trial version and try that. Are you putting a development or a runtime on the win98?

ps - don't use a 98 machine any longer than you need to.

I'm taking any client that I can off of 98 and into XP.

              John,
This might make it easier. If you are using the runtime, there are no registry entries necessary. What I use is a fully patched version, with shadow, that I copy to the server. Then when I want to set up a user I can just copy the whole durectory to the local HDD. I also have a configured icon for the desktop so I can also copy this over.
I then refresh the shadow to get the latest app version and the user is ready to go.
From the copied build of the program you will still have to update to new builds manually on each machine.

Forgot to mention, most of the client machines are win98se and we are only running Alpha 5v5 but the v6 runtime should work the same.
For v6 make sure the machines are full patched in win98.
For v5 they need to be patched but it appears, less so. V5 will crash an totally unpatched win98se machine (in my experience) with certain operations.
