Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

RE: Tabbed Object vs. Conditional Object

    Hello Dave,

Sherry and Jay Martin, owners at that time of the Alpha Forum, and Tom Marcellus, I believe the editor, put it on.

I didn't know you were there, but I guess it wasn't too far from home for you.

Bill Sarramone, that's the guy who did the tabbed object look-a-like in a5v1. Nice guy, I wonder what ever happened to him.

Remember Gary Smith? He was one of the more prolific A4 folks. I wonder what he's up to now days.

    Jim

RE: Tabbed Object vs. Conditional Object

Tom, one nice thing about conditional objects is that there is, as far as I know, no practical limitation on the number of conditions/properties for them.

In an app I have that runs in a small chain of hospitals in Respiratory Care, I use a conditional object for the bottom half of the screen, based on the Therapy for the parent/patient.

There are 25 or so Therapies, each one having a different configuartion for an embedded browse for the same child table.

Is working like a champ on a network with about 7 or 8 concurrent users.

This app, however, does not need tabs, since the Therapy determines what is in the conditioanl object.

RE: Tabbed Object vs. Conditional Object

            Hi Tom,

I am really surprised that the Tabbed object has not be fixed. I am pretty sure the tabbed object never worked well from day one. Now we are on day 6. I wonder where the problem is with this?

I also noticed that alpha loads up a little slower and some of my older forms are bouncy. I really notice this on any form that has onrollover events. Verse five seemed so much faster and calmer. Jack

RE: Tabbed Object vs. Conditional Object

Anytime changes or enhancements are made, there will no doubt be 'reactions' in areas not expected. I suspect these little annoyances are a bit difficult to track down which of course, means it takes more time. Once they figure out what 'action' caused the 'reaction' then it's to figure out how to solve the problem.

We just need to be patient and they'll get the little gremlins. Alpha is really good about providing frequent patches which usually includes one or more new features.

RE: Tabbed Object vs. Conditional Object

                Jack,

I use tabbled objects a LOT. I don't seem to have the problems others are mentioning. As far as i can see they repaint well. Maybe it depends upon certain settings. The only negative thing that comes to mind is that under certain cases there is minor bleed through, which can be dealt with.

                  I also use tabs successfully.

Perhaps I avoid problems by not having huge numbers of tabs and huge numbers of objects on a given tab. I avoid this because it tends to make forms complex and confusing to the user. I just use more forms.

                    Bill,

When I have a lot of objects on my tabber, I put them on a subform. I have one complex tabber w. about 7 tabs and each tab-page has it's own subform. No bleed through, and it works very well.

I appreciate that information as it's something I never thought to do. And in addition it may clarify relationships for the user.

Like you I thought Gary Smith was a hell of a presenter. I see that he's been on the Ver 4 board several times recently.
