Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    phone number mask

    Hi, Can A5V6 when using a conditional mask be instructed to evaluate the input into the field and apply the rules upon exiting the field?
    Example: I have two phone masks (000) 000-000 and 000-0000.
    Tried the len(trim(phone))=10 which in my 4.5 worked if I left the field and returned. Have played with A_Field_Value with no success. It works if I use another field and condition to say T for toll,L for local. But would prefer it to enter automatically as I have about 5 different phone fields. Want to type 2343456 and have mask 234-3456, same with 4132343456-" (413) 234-3456. Have expressions figured out for other cases, just not sure how to make it evaluate them.
    Thank you
    P.S. I use a library computer to post and check back about once a week.

    RE: phone number mask

    Richard,

    To solve the same issue as yours in my own apps, I created a simple function called Phone_dash() and use it in the CanWrite event. The function converts any number to the format I want. This has an added advantage over masks because the same function can be used in custom lookup routines so the user just types the number and it is converted before the lookup is run. That way the "find" format always matches the saved record value.

    The script/function is simple. Just start by doing a Remspecial() on the input value then use the Stuff() function to add whatever characters you need based on the number of actual digits entered. (My preferred format is just dashes and no "1" at the beginning.)

    Then....

    In the CanWrite:
    A_field_value = Phone_dash( A_field_value )

    In a 'lookup script':
    phone_in = ui_get_text("ENTER PHONE NUMBER", "Enter phone number to locate:")
    IF phone_in = ""
    END'
    END IF
    phone_in = Phone_dash( phone_in )
    parentform.find( phone_in )

      RE: phone number mask

      Thank you for the reply. I have not gotten it running yet. I have had to deal with other issues with the 4.5-"6 conversion. Seems everytime I look I find something new that does not work as it did in 4.5.ie:color equations that do not work due to name changes in colors. Went to print out a filter form and it goes into la la land. Turned out that when I fixed the problem with autoincrement fields it messed a conditional object expression.(isalpha and I changed the field to numeric to fix autoincrement).Other glitches as quick_search()didn't work it is now quickfilter(). It is coming along slowly but surely. Am getting a lot of experience along the way.
      Thanks again

        RE: phone number mask

        Thank you Cal, finally finished converting all my 4.5 app to V6. Had time to try your method. Could not make the Stuff work with ( ) - format.
        Here is what I ended up with

        FUNCTION PhoneMask AS C (Phone AS C )

        'Have to edit field rules for Can_Write event for all phone number fields in database "quick and easy to do"
        ' A_Field_Value=PhoneMask(A_Field_Value)

        PhoneMask = remspecial(phone)

        IF left(PhoneMask,1)="1" .and. len(PhoneMask)"=11
        PhoneMask = substr(PhoneMask,2)
        END IF

        IF len(PhoneMask) = 10 then
        PhoneMask = "("+ left(PhoneMask,3)+") "+substr(PhoneMask,4,3) + "-" + right(PhoneMask,4)

        'elseif substr(PhoneMask,11,1)="x" then
        'PhoneMask = "("+ left(PhoneMask,3)+") "+substr(PhoneMask,4,3) + "-" + substr(PhoneMask,7,4)+" ext. "+substr(PhoneMask,12)
        'elseif substr(PhoneMask,8,1)="x" then
        'PhoneMask = left(PhoneMask,3)+"-"+substr(PhoneMask,4,4)+" ext. "+substr(PhoneMask,9)
        'Tried these to enter 1234567x345 -" 123-4567 ext. 345 / 1234567xpress1 then2 -" 123-4567 ext. press1 then2
        'Upon further thought probably not worth the effort of updating my database because companies keep changing the sequence
        'to prevent such speedy access "please listen carefully, our menu options have changed......"

        elseif len(PhoneMask)=7 then
        PhoneMask = left(PhoneMask,3)+"-"+right(PhoneMask,4)
        else
        PhoneMask=phone
        END IF
        END FUNCTION

        'This from method suggested by Scott Emerick on Alpha 5 v5 forum.
        'Script is placed in on depart event on form
        'Gives same results but takes more effort to enter in all on depart fields vs above function method.
        '
        '
        'cv = remspecial(this.value)
        'IF len(cv) =10 THEN
        'this.value = "("+left(cv,3)+") "+substr(cv,4,3) + "-" + right(cv,4)
        'elseif len(cv) = 7 THEN
        'this.value = left(cv,3) + "-" + right(cv,4)
        'END IF

        As a side note I got a Caterpillar database program for hydraulic hoses. It uses Java and a CMD window as a server and IE for the front end. Boy is it ever slow. If the DB wasn't password protected it would be in A6 in a flash.

        Thanks again.
