Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Please Mister Please..Don't play B17 !!!

The more tools, interfaces and code options available to the developer within the confines of our beloved Alpha Five benefits everyone.

Xdialog is a breathtaking, speed monster addition. Not only is this new (thus has a learning curve) and fast, it looks great as well.

Sometimes we need to step back, take a deep breath and start over again. New language, new look and great speed. Jack

      RE: Please Mister Please..Don't play B17 !!!

OK, Gabe, so I wish to claim your Brooklyn Bridge prize for finding something that can be done with Xdialog that cannot be done with forms. 8-) Let me explain.

Some of you may have read my article on "Affordable Data Modeling Tools for Use with Alpha Five". It appeared in the recently released Alpha Alerter for August 2005. One of the things I alluded to there was that I was in the process of developing a bit of software that would take tables, and all their data field definitions, from a data modeling tool and automatically generate, from the SQL DDL syntax that most modeling tools produce, A5 Xbasic code to create the tables. This Xbasic code can then be taken to Alpha Five and from it all the database table and field name definitions automatically generated.

Anyone not convinced this is a worthwhile thing to do may want to read my article.

There are a number of ways to do what I want. For example, some of the data modeling products (Case Studio is an example) have powerful inbuilt scripting languages. It's possible to use the language to create A5 Xbasic and generate the syntax needed to create A5 tables from the data model created in Case Studio. The path I have chosen to follow is to use an external tool to create a free standing executable to do the same thing. This gives me more flexibility to create a software tool that can be used with a larger number of data modeling products.

So I am writing this software at the present time. To reiterate, it produces A5 Xbasic to create the tables and data fields of a database design. It also produces the error messages and other dialog boxes needed to communicate with the user when the Xbasic code is run. Now I'm getting close.

Can you guess how this might happen? That's right, the dialog boxes are hand built in Xbasic using Xdialog. There is no GUI fabrication taking place here, it is all hand built using Xbasic and Xdialog syntax.

So, can the same thing be done using A5 forms? Uh, uh. Not on.

So this is my case. I know, Gabe, you are a scholar and a gentleman and will admit defeat graciously. 8-)

I had a concerns about shipping charges for the Brooklyn Bridge but I see your offer includes shipping too. Wow, that's just great because New Zealand is where I reside and I don't think I could afford the charges from the northern hemisphere to a destination down here. But that's OK if you are paying.

That's all. Just let me know of your acceptance of the inevitable and I'll send you my shipping address. Now just where can I think of that I might put the thing ... My back yard is not big enough. Not to worry, I'll find somewhere before it arrives.

Way to go, Gabe. Theres going to be a lot of ticked off Broolyners over this...especially when swimming to work in December. BTW, Brett, UPS ships in 40 pound boxes...so there may be some assembly required.

Thanks for the warning, Steve. I think I might have to rent some warehouse space. This may be a bigger undertaking than I had imagined. And shifting all those 40 kg boxes down here might make the earth wobble a bit in its orbit.

Since I stumbled on this Thread - I though I would try to get myself a little piece of the Brooklyn Bridge. Freight costs might get expensive to Austalia

            Look at the attached Image
This is an Xdialog with adjusts itself dyanamically to the user specified number of rows and columns. The columns width also adjusts accordingly. I can have 100 or more columns on a single screen and as many rows and the data is still valuable since it is a colour codes represantation of online bookings (Rooms vs Dates)

It is also very fast - something I could not acheive with forms.

Believe me I tried hard to get the form approach to work before goinf don the Xdialog path.

Internested in your thoughts or concessions
