Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Refreshing form after modal update?

    Hello Group,

Proceeding thru the 'Learning Action Scripting' book I came to the section that shows how to update a record using a form opened in modal mode.

The book said that after closing the update form that the form should display the updated record. Mine did not update the record so I tried making the update form modeless and after closing the update form the form did update using the 'OnActivate' event to do a form refresh.

I used the trace window to try to figure out why the 'OnActivate' event would not refresh the from using the modal update form and to my surprise the 'OnActivate' event does not get triggered after returning from a modal form.

How do I update(refresh) the form if no event is triggered when returning from a modal form?

I have an example attached, startup form will display problem.

    Thanks for any direction,
    Bill

RE: Refreshing form after modal update?

I am having the same experience as Bill did in January. I am very disappointed that no one (not even at Alpha) ever responded to this. Here is my situation.

I have a button on a form that calls a series of modal forms after which it returns to the original form. I have a script in the OnActivate event that will take all the modal input into account and take action appropriately. Only one problem - it never fires when focus returns to the form. If I click on another window (say the Control Panel) and then back to the form, the OnActivate event fires, but not when focus returns from modal forms used as dialogs.

Anyone else experience this or know how to fix it???

RE: Refreshing form after modal update?

It is true that when a button on form opens another MODAL form, then OnActivate event on the parent form does not fire.

personally, i think it should fire. but it does not, and it is not likely that we will change this behaviour in the short term because doing so would break a lot of other things.

in any event, the solution to the problem is easy.

just add a new step to your script after the command that opens the modal form. the command is the same as the command that you have on the form's OnActivate event.

        e.g.
the "Refresh Layout" command, or if you prefer xbasic
        topparent.refresh_layout()

the reason that you had to put this in the onActivate event in the case of a modeless form is that in this case, any code you put in the script after the code that opened the form would execute immediately - i.e. xbasic would not pause to wait till you closed the new form since that form was modeless.

Essentially what Selwyn is saying is that if you put a script on a button on a form that calls a MODAL form, the script pauses until the modal(s) are complete and focus returns to the form that originally called the MODAL form or forms. Pretty cool!
