Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to attach a file with ODBC

I did this in version 5 and need to do it again in version 6 and I can't remember how...

I want to read my ACT 2000 file, and create a report. It works perfectly in version 5 using an ODBC link to the live ACT 2000 file.

The only ODBC I see is under File-"Import-"ODBC import Genie.

As I tinker in these options I can't seem to make sense of what I am doing. For starters, I don't want to import it - just create a link to the data so I can write a report based on the data. And perhaps create some records by reading the data.

I can't just add the ACT dbf file to the A5 database as it doesn't let me write reports - I assume as it has no data dictionary.

I also can't find anything useful in the help files - I get buried in import genie and web application information, none of which seems relevant.

V6 does not have the ability to attache directly to an ODBC data source. You can only import using the Genie or use an Xdialog to view/change the data

Version 7 will have full client-server support for ODBC and several other data sources, such as MySQL, Oracle, and others.

Does this mean that V6 will not communicate with the UPS shipping software?

RE: How to attach a file with ODBC

Inter-process communication typically is not through ODBC. However if you are using Alpha Five to manipulate UPS's data without running the UPS software, you may need ODBC. Sorry I can't be more specific, I am not famliar with the UPS shipping software.

Are you sure you need ODBC? ACT used to use .dbf files.

RE: How to attach a file with ODBC

Cal - ACT does still use dbf. For some reason it won't simply add in version 6 - it does in 5. I go through the process, but it doesn't show up in the control panel.

It is so easy in version 5. However, you still need an ODBC link if you want to create reports as simply adding it only lets you read it - you can't create a report. I get an error message "Error no such field occurred while trying to start application". I assume as there is no data dictionary.

I can't afford trying stuff that doesn't work. I will wait till version 7.

                    Lenny,
FYI, I worked with UPS today and V6 works fine with the UPS Worldwide Shipping software.
