Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    changing development tool

    Hello Alpha workers,
After 2 years of having discussions with a lot of developers, using trial versions from different tools and even buying the complete products (WinDev and AlphaFive) we have decided to migrate all our apps developed in MAGIC to ALPHAFIVE. So we have a lot to learn and I will bother you in the (near) future with a lot of questions.
I had already posted a message at this forum in which I also mentioned Magic, but nobody with Magic experience reflects. I am wondering if there are previous, or maybe current, Magic developers in the Alpha community ?

I hope to met you all at this forum.

    Kind regards,
Teun van Unen - UNDIX InformatieSystemen - The Netherlands

      RE: changing development tool

      Hello Peter,
I only know Informix from C-Isam, but Magic is a magnificent development tool, but because of the high cost only for big companies. For information you can better go to their website : http://www.magicsoftware.com.

Anr/or you can download eDeveloper's (name of the last version V9.4) guides with the following link http://www.magicsoftware.com/bin/en.jsp?enPage=InnerPage&enDisplay=view&enDispWhat=Object&enDispWho=downloads^l51&enZone=downloads&enretain=branch&lNavZ=tech_t_devr&lNavO=tech_tools^l45&branch=hqa

Or have a look at the forum : http://groups.yahoo.com/group/magicu-l/

Or you can download a Fundamental's Training Course at :
      http://www.magicsoftware.com/bin/en.jsp?enPage=InnerPage&enDisplay=view&enDispWhat=object&enDispWho=tech%5El1%5EseDeveloper&enZone=tech&enVersion=0&enretain=branch&

Magic is and has no database itself but can connect to a lot of them. See their information.
To learn Magic it is better to know nothing about a programming tool and start fresh (I did not) because it's an 'abnormal' approach of making programs.

I hope this will help a little bit.

      Regards, Teun.

        Teun

Thanks for the info. I had heard of Magic 4GL sometime in the past and someone had described it as 'similar to Informix 4GL' hence the question. As a matter of interest why are you migrating away from Magic ??

        Regards

        Peter

          RE: changing development tool

          Hi Peter,
          There are more reasons :
The costs of Magic raises the price of my apps and support-contract, so it the prices became to high for the small market with a lot of competitors
          1. for every customer you had to buy a runtime
          2. and a support-contract
          and another
          3. Magic goes 'to far' for me, I don't nead all the new stuff.

I think (and others with me) AlphaFive will serve me better and cheaper.

          Regards,
          Teun.
