Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    <TBL>.INDEX_TAG_ADD()

    Im trying to use the "TBL".INDEX_TAG_ADD() method to add indexes to a table.
    I using variables with this method.

    This example works OK
    tbl = table.open(tblName)
    idxName = "facility"
    idxDef = "FACILITY"
    indx = tbl.index_tag_add(idxName,idxDef)
    tbl.close()

    This example generates the error, Bad Expression Character.

    tbl = table.open(tblName)
    idxName = "date"
    idxDef = "CDATE(DATE)+ALLTRIM(FACILITY)+ALLTRIM(INVOICE)+ALLTRIM(WORK_DONE),\"\",D"
    indx = tbl.index_tag_add(idxName,idxDef)
    tbl.close()

    Ive tried many different variations and combinations with no success.

    The problem does not appear to be the index name or the index field, but it has to do with the filter and ascending/descending portion.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Happy New Year!!

    RE: <TBL>.INDEX_TAG_ADD()

    Ron, the quote marks look wrong. I'd use the interactive editor to see how Alpha is evaluating the expression.

    BTW, the use of the term DATE for the name of the table field and the name of the indextag is something I'd avoid. DATE() is a built in function. I avoid using names that mirror the built in functions.

      RE: <TBL>.INDEX_TAG_ADD()

      Index_Tag_Add() requires separate arguments for Order, Filter, and Type. It appears that you are attempting to combine them into one string.

        RE: <TBL>.INDEX_TAG_ADD()

        Hi Cal,

        I did come to that conclusion also, however; I got the same results when I broke the string down into four seperate variables.

        I've included "ui_msg_box"s in my script and all the information appears to be there and in the proper format.

        It doesn't work.

          RE: <TBL>.INDEX_TAG_ADD()

          Ive been having a terrible time with the enclosed zip file (database).

          Overall, using xbasic, Im trying to do a remote update of an existing application.
          In this case, I needed to add 3 new tables to the database. That portion of my code works just fine.
          I then need to add 10 indexes to each of the 3 tables.

          Thats where everything is going wrong.

          I have 2 scripts. The first is _updatebuild which when run calls up _CheckIndex

          _updatebuild sets the parameters for the generic script _CheckIndex.

          As I understand it, the line indx = idxtbl.index_get(idxName) is suppose to look for the named index and if that index is not found, it will generate and error. The line is not working reliably at all. Sometimes it finds an error, and other times it does not.

          The second problem is that when it does find an error, the line indx = idxtbl.index_tag_add(idxName, idxDef) is failing in one of two ways. It either fails to add the new index or it fails and generates an error message Bad expression character.

          Ive been looking at this too long and maybe Im overlooking something. Then again, maybe Im trying to do something that Alpha 5 cannot do or maybe this is a Bug. I would appreciate it very much if some could take a look at this code.

          Thats again,
