Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A4 to A5V6 - Useful Dialog Script

    For several of my daily duties in Alpha Four I would use Dialog Script. For example in a set that I use to record contributions for deposits I would fill two scripts - Rep_Date for the date of the deposit and Depos_NO for the Deposit Number. Those Scripts would then fill a date field ("%Rep_Date" in the field rules) and a deposit field until I changed it to a new one.

    Then I placed the %Rep_date and the %Deposit in a search to create various deposit reports. I used the %Rep_date for several different searches.

    Somehow I am spinning in circles trying to figure out what was relatively easy in Alpha Four. I know it is me not the Alpha Five.

    I created scripts with variables, but just can not make the connection. Any advice? I miss plugging the scripts into reports and field rules, but I know there must be an alternative in alpha five version six.

    Hi Patrick,

    A couple of thoughts....

    1) do not try to use the A4 techinques in V6. As you know, A4 is DOS based and A5v6 is windows based.

    2) you could post your script and let others take a look and make suggestions.

    Short of that, not sure what help can be suggested.

      Ken,

      1. I am trying to make the transition to think A5V6, but I have been using the same application with A4 since 1993. I went through the entire Getting Started with A5 and Intro to Action Scripting. Unfortunately I think it is enough information to be dangerous.

      2. The script does work and ask for a date, but I need to get the date from the script to a field using it over and over again to enter contributions. Then I want to use the date to search for those records for a report. It seems like this should be so easy, but it is just not clicking. Anyway the script is below.

      'Prompt for a date and store result in a variable called 'vdReport_Date'.

      dim prmpt_title as c
      dim prmpt_prompt as c
      dim prmpt_default as c

      prmpt_title = "Report Date"
      prmpt_prompt = "Enter Date for Report (mm/dd/yyyy)"
      prmpt_default = a5_eval_expression("=dtoc(date())")

      DIM SHARED vdReport_Date AS C

      vdReport_Date = ui_get_date(prmpt_title,prmpt_prompt,prmpt_default)

        Hi Patrick,

        1. I know what you mean!!

        2. Open the report in design mode and click on the Report menu and then Report properties or Detail Properties. You will be able to design the filter for the report w/o writing code, at least in most cases.

        See if that helps.

          I would set global variables for anything you want to use in several places. Look at ask variables to get the data into variables, very easy just not as nice looking as xdialog. For the search you can use the same variable either in a find by key if you just need I record or in a query (search sort in A4). You can do all of this in action scripting and use the query builder for the query.

            I created some global variables and I tried to use the vdReport_Date and when I do instead of getting the date in the field I get something like //////////

              RE: A4 to A5V6 - Useful Dialog Script

              Hello Patrick,

              In Alpha Four we only had global variables. Depending on how you want to count them, in A5 we have 6 different 'levels' of variables. But for the most part think of it as 3, local, shared, and global. If you have declared the variable as global and set it value, you will need to make sure the variable is also defined as a global in the report, otherwise it is probably looking for a local variable with the same name.

              The only other thing I can think of that would cause this is that the formatting in the report is not correct, but as this is a date variable, this should be taken care of by Alpha.

              Good luck,
              Jim

                Setting the variable I think is the issue. I am leaving the global variable blank thinking I can fill it when I pull it up. Of course, I have never been able to pull up the variable to fill it. I guess there is something I am just not getting in the translation. I could get the script correct asking fo r the date, but I can't get that date to become the default of a field. There must be a different way or something I am missing.

                  Patrick,

                  Based on what you said earlier, A5 has some very powerful genies for date prompting, at least I think that's whaqt you want to do. Explore what I said above and it should help.

                    RE: A4 to A5V6 - Useful Dialog Script

                    Thanks Ken and all.

                    My problem is I have not even gotten to the point of generating a report. I am just trying to produce and environment to enter data.

                    Fields in Database
                    ID_number -- This is pulled from another database
                    Contribution_Date
                    Deposit_Number
                    Contribution_Type
                    Payment_Type
                    Tax_Deductible

                    I want at the beginning of data entry to be asked for a date and a deposit number and then for those variables to be entered in the Contribution_Date and Deposit_Number for each record until I am done entering contributions for the specific Deposit. It seems like it should be achievable.

                    In the midst of the challenge I have tried to reformulate and figure a new method, but yet to be successful.
