Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Tree Controls

    Hi all,
Does anyone have any examples of a tree control being populated by a drop down field box and form(s) that are populated by that chosen tree. Please let me know if you can help. I cannot figure this one out.
    Thanks,

    David

      RE: Tree Controls

Hi and thank you for the reply!

What I am trying to do is develope my main form with a drop down combo box that allows me to set focus on the tree control selected. Let say I have Clients, Contractors, Projects, ...in this combo box all relating to different tables. I want a tree control to focus on the selected choice such as projects and populate that tree. Then I want the tree branches to populate the form with the options I select from the tree. I am trying to do this so I do not have to switch in and out of forms. I am sure this can be done, I just can't figure it out.

Please let me know if you have any ideas as I would be so greatful.

      Thanks,
      David Pierce

        RE: Tree Controls

        David,

I have a tree object on a form which is filled via a script. One difference, however, makes me feel that you will have difficulty in your design. Namely, I know up front how many nodes I will need. My script can change the text and values of the nodes. But I see no way to change the number of choices. Hence, for one tree to dynamically change from representing three different tables will be difficult if possible.

One alternative for you, however, may be to have three trees overlapping in the same location of the form. Depending on what table the user selects, one of those trees would show while the other two would be hidden.

Whatever approach you take, I have employed a trick for dynamically updating the tree. I want as many nodes as there are records in the "ee_pos" table. In the tree object, my choices are computed by expression and the expression merely generates a blank list:
        replicate(chr(13)+chr(10),reccount("ee_pos"))
In my script I change the choice type from "expression" to "list" and then I assign the text and values to the nodes.

I hope this gives you some guidance on where to take your design from here.

        Steve

          David,

Also consider the use of a tabbed object. If instead of the user selecting the table from a drop down list they selected a tab, you could have a different tree on each tab. This would make it simple in design without having to repopulate a tree nor show/hide different trees.

Thank you a lot. I was planing on having my forms set up with tab controls but not my trees? I will work on it some more and let you know what I have found out.
            Thanks,
