Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Tools > SpellCheck

    I am having a terrible struggle learning A5. I keep getting bogged down on little things. I've gotten frustrated with the AlphaSports tutorial so I now also use Susan Bush's books. My current problem is that I cannot find "Tools" anywhere on my A5 screen. I've copied the following snippet from A5 Help:

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    While in a form or browse, select Tools " Check Spelling, and select the range you want to check, which may be:

    Current Record

    Current Field

    All Records

    The Spell Check window appears, letting you customize the scope of the operation. (end)

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    Would somebody please just tell me where to find "Tools" while in a form or browse (or under any other conditions) I swear it is not anywhere to be found including a right-click menu.

    A related item is the speed typing glossary. I can't find that either.

    I'm using v6 with the 2031 build and have re-installed the program twice now.

    Any help for me?
    Thanks, Jim

    It's on the menu bar at the very top of the screen. You should see File, Edit, View, Tools, Window, Help, and a number of other menus depending on the context you are in.

      RE: Tools > SpellCheck (addendum)

      I should have said in my first message that I do have spellcheck on the top tool bar as a stand alone item. (ABC with a check mark) I don't mind at all having that configuration, but if I could have a "Tools" on the bar, then I could access the speed typing glossary and whatever else is in the "Tools" dropdown.

        Please read my response. Tools is a *menu* at the very top of the screen.

          RE: Tools > SpellCheck

          Arron, I simply don't have File, Edit, View, Windows, or Help at the top of my screen.

          Here's what I do have when the control panel is closed:
          "Create a new database";
          "Open a database";
          "Recently opened databases";
          "Interactive window";
          "Restore a previously backed-up database";
          "Web application server";
          "Exit"
          -- and that's all

          With the control panel open but no tables open, I have these items:

          "Create new database";
          "Open a database";
          "Close a database";
          "Interactive Window";
          "Refresh";
          "Add tables/sets";
          "Drop tables/sets"
          "the 4 viewing options"
          "Web application server"
          "Web projects"
          "Exit"
          -- and that's all

          With a table open in browse or view mode, I have these items:

          "Design mode";
          "Form view" or Browse view"
          "Print"
          "Cut"
          "Copy"
          "Paste"
          "First record"
          "Previous record"
          "Current record"
          "Next record"
          "Last record"
          "Enter new record"
          "Change new record"
          "Save record"
          "Cancel changes"
          "Sort ascending"
          "Sort descending"
          "Querie genie"
          "Querie by expression"
          "Quick filter"
          "Show all"
          "Find by key"
          "Select index"
          "Field statistics"
          "Export to Excel"
          "MailMerge in Word"
          "Spell Check"
          "Control Panel"
          -- and that's all

          To continue in a more abreviated fashion, if I'm restructuring or working in field rules or editing an index, or any other operation, I still don't have "File, Edit, View, Tools, Windows or Help" at the top of the screen.

          Can someone help me with this problem, please and thanks,
          Jim

            Aaron, I was composing message #9348 at the same time you were composing your #9347. I posted that very lengthy message before I knew you had already responded to my #9346 post.

            But anyway, I'm still not seeing File, Edit, View, Tools, or Windows, Help

              If you use prt scrn and paste to paint, you can make a graphics file that shows exactly what you screen shows.

              Saving as a png is a good way to get quality in a small size.

                  Here's a screen shot of what I see when I have the control panel for Alphasports open.

                  Note the red arrow on the attached image.

                  I noticed that you are not using the default windows style. The larger fonts sometimes cause certain features to change. Try the default style and see if it changes.

                  We have the symptom, then we need to id the problem, and finally we can find a solution.

                            I think that you want to the windows display properties.

                            Right click on the desktop open space and choose properties.

                            Then click the appearance tab and you should use the settings in the attached image.

                            These are from XP, but should be similar to other windows versions.

                              Al, I went into desktop display properties and downsized every font size to Arial 9 pt for every element of the screen. I uninstalled A5v6 and then deleted the A5v6 folder; I then did a fresh A5v6 download and another install. I still dont have File, Edit, View, Tools, Windows, Help at the top of my A5 screen.

                              (BTW, I use XP w/SP2 on a Dell 600m laptop)

                              There are 3 screen shots in a zipped folder attached to this post.
