Default Broadcast Email To Each Record

I am just starting with A5v6 after using a4v6 for years. I have set up a small table of 40 records each with an e-mail address. I want to send an e-mail with conditional statements to each of the 40 records in the table. I made and e-mail message and stuck the e-mail field in the BC area. Obviously I am not doing it correctly or I am misunderstanding the functionality of a5v6.

I appreciate any help with my ignorance. I did some looking around in the help and message board, but have not found the issue.

    What is the "BC area?"

That would be "BCC". An email message must have one recipient in the "To" field. This is a limitation of the protocol described in RFC 822. Most servers, seeing no "To" field, will take the first recipient from the cc or bcc fields and stick it in the to field, but I imagine this is server dependent.

We need more details on what you are doing.

I'm not sure if it's a language issue, but you don't send email *to* a record. You use data in a record to send an email. If you are trying to send bulk email, I would suggest you look into our Netmailer product, which does just that.

Yes, I did mean BCC. Sorry. I did try it with the TO field also. Sorry I did not do a great job with explaining.

I want to send an e-mail to each of the forty individuals in the table, but want to include conditionals to various individuals in the table. Yes, I want to use data in the record to send buld email. So I guess you are saying that Net mailer is what I will need to accomplish this task.

Netmailer is designed to do exactly what you are talking about.

I guess I misunderstood the e-mail feature of Alpha Five Version Six. Thanks for you help in clearing this up.

Well, it's not that you *can't* do it, it's just that you'll have to write some code to accomplish your goal. To do something simple, it wouldn't be very difficult, but we spent a lot of time developing Netmailer to handle everything for you.

    Patrick,

Sorry to jump in but Ed Larrabee has an excellent example of using email with Alpha in the "Getting Started with Alpha" manual. This probably would suffice for a small-time user.

I read through the e-mail section and it does not seem to deal with the issue of broadcasting e-mails.

If you aren't interested in Netmailer, which will automate all this for you, look into the email_send() and email_send2() functions. Try to remove the word "broadcast" from your vocabulary when referring to emails, since emails are not broadcast, they are sent to a specific user. "Send" is a much better verb to communicate the concept you are referring to. That might be why you are having a hard time finding documentation on the subject.

    Patrick

After trying both ways, I was very happy that I got Netmailer.

It will do all that you want and will have error handling that would take a very long to time think of, let alone write.

If what you are doing is a business rather than an hobby, then netmailer is an easy choice. If your doing a hobby, then have a fun and interesting time writing the code to do the job. It's a fun learning experience.

    Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
