Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Very strange issue

Ok, Had these issues before the release of 2030, still have them after patch... Browses dont seem to be working right. I'm testing this software and 50% of the time it shows all the correct records in the browse window and the 50% of the time it will only show 1. I changed nothing with my form, it just randomly displays incorrect info. This browse works fine if I open it in A5v5 but not in v6 even though it was written in v6.
The other issue I'm reporting is some SERIOUS refresh problems. The biggest issue seems to be once again with the browse windows. After about 10-15 mins of designing I have to close the form out and bring it back up due to so much crap on my screen left by previous windows. I do wanna say that before the last two patches the refresh problem was much less. It seems the last two patches have made it worse, but hey.. that's just an observation.

    Thanks,
    Dustin

One additional problem I forgot to mention.. tabbed forms, when clicking through the tabs the tab names will go blank and then no longer let me open that part of the tabbed object. To get it back I have to shut down Alpha entirely and bring it back up.. then it MAY work ok.

      Dustin,

the behavior of your video adapter / display seems to be a common denominator in your problems. You might try detuning your video adapter to reduce or eliminate hardware acceleration.

In addition to Tom's suggestion, you might also try a database compact. I usually put a button on a form or 2 do the compact that way. It gets rid of a bunch of clutter. You should do that on a regular basis when designing.

Tom is right about your video card. From what I've seen, as far as posts go, this isn't a software problem but a video card issue. Have you updated the video drivers?

Video Drivers are the newest release, although it is a geforce 4 mx (which I know can be pretty crappy at times). I'll try dropping the acceleration on my card but it would seem to me that if it was my video card's settings/drivers were causing the issue that the problem would always be there. These issues are not consistent. When they do pop up it seems that it gets worse over time untill I shut down Alpha and bring it back up. Sorta sounds to me like a kind of "clogging" problem in Alpha.

            RE: Very strange issue

            Dustin,

Here's a good way to determine if the problem is Alpha's.

Search the forum for like problems. If the problem is Alpha, there no doubt would be others in the same boat. Since I've not seen reports like this from others, my guess is that it's either your video card or perhaps some code athat me be causihng the problem

Another way is to zip your file and post it. If other's encounter the same problem using your app but not in their work, the problem is likely in your app.

If you're running on Windows 98 or 98SE I'd eliminate hardware acceleration to the video display. -- t

I know this will sound wierd to you, too, but do you have an unusual mouse driver installed? -- t

                  Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies, no.. no win98 or me.. running totally up to date XP pro. As far as for my mouse, it's a remotie mouse that did require specific drivers.. couldnt use Windows default drivers. What just really boggles my mind is the randomness of the problems with the browse. Here's a but of another wierd issue I ran into while trying to fix this... Opened my app in v5 and evrything seem to work fine, saved the DB and opened it back up in 6, all refrsh issues and everything else were gone! That is untill about 4 hours later, then it all started slowly comming back. It's like v5 corrected something with the App but when in v6 whatever was wrong slowly got put back in. as far as posting the app, I'm going to take a look at a few more things first and then I'll try to post it, the DB may be too big to post with a 1mb limit

                    RE: Very strange issue

If it were me and my video display system were up to date, I'd be suspicious of the mouse drivers. If possible I'd recommend you try a plain mouse to see whether it makes a difference.

                      I could not disagree more.
If I had a refresh issue with software, which I do with Alpha, I would think it was either my video card, it's drivers, direct-x, or the software it's self. Mouse tracking is displayed through the video card.
