Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Return to browse

In my application I open a dialog from a browse (not embedded) and then upon closing the dialog I return to the browse. How can I return to the original row and column where the cursor was positioned when the dialog was launched ?

If the number value entered in a column exceeds a certian level I open the dialog.

Why not work from the field itself on a form rather than from the browse on the form?

          Corey,

What have you attached the code to. Is is a field rule event which triggers the dialog to open.

In any case, the easiest way to get back to where you were is to get the record number of the current record before opening the dialog and then fetch that record number when the dialog closes. Using the record number means you don't have to ensure that a particular index is current. On the other hand, you can manage the index issue if you want to fetch by a key value.

            RE: Return to browse

I thought it would be something like that but I can't find the functions to do this. In the field rule I thought it would be the ""Browse".Current_Record()" function but I can't seem to get the pointer to the browse set. Can you help me with a code example. Then when I depart from my dialog what is the fetch function that would use the record number. Is it "tbl"fetch_goto() ? Will that work when returning to a browse ? Thanks

              RE: Return to browse

              Corey,

Here is a little demo. You haven't told me enough for me to model your situation exactly but this should get you started.

There is one little table and a single saved browse.

Double click on a line in the browse and you are presented with a dialog asking for a record number. Enter a number (it had better be a low number as the table contains only 8 records!) and the cursor will jump to the appropriate record.

Open the browse in design mode and examine the code on its on_dblclick event to see how it works.

                RE: Return to browse

Thanks for the help. With that approach I am getter closer. I can get the record number and it is maintained
through the dialog form processing without a problem. When I close the dialog the last thing I do before the "topparent.find(vRecno)" is display a temporary message to see if the vRecno is valid. It is to that point. Then the "topparent.find(vRecno)" causes this error:

                "topparent.find(vRecno)
                conflicting expression data types"

                  Corey,

I do not have Version 6 at hand at my office but the problem is most likely due to the fact that the ui_get code I posted returns a character value whereas record number is numeric.

Examine the double click code in my example and you will observe that I have (if I remember well) converted the text output to a number by means of the val() method.

You probably need to do the same.

I see what you did but I don't think it is a problem with vRecno being numeric. My test message seem to vRecno is numeric. Could the error have more to do with the object reference (topparent) ?

                      RE: Return to browse

                      Corey,

If the line topparent.find... is in code executed from the dialog box or a form opened in dialog mode the reference will fail. If the code is run from the browse double click event then topparent refers to the browse and the code will work.

You need to get a pointer to the browse layout and then run the line pointername.find(vRecno).

If you post your database any one of us can write the line for you in 2 seconds.

I'd love to post the database but my boss says I can't because of the proprietary nature of what we are trying to create. Anyway, I have used a pointer to the object but when it returns it starts a new record in the main form and then goes to the browse but of course since their is no child records in the browse yet it just goes to the browse and not any specific record.

Tell your boss you guys are protecting your proprietary interest in something that doesn't work.

                          On second thought better not.

Set up a demo and post that. Otherwise you are on your own.
