Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

"Display only unique keys" not working

    Hi,

I have a form based on a table. The table has records which contain manufacturers, the equipment type, and items.

For example, if this were a car dealership, the table might contain:
Field - Make, Model and Vin
    Records 1 - 7 contain:

    Ford, Mustang, Vin # 123456
    Ford, Mustang, Vin # 123457
    Ford, F150, Vin # 654321
    Ford, F150, Vin #754321
    Mercury, Sable, Vin # 555123
    Mercury, Mountaineer, Vin # 333123
    Mercury, Marauder, VIn # 999123

I would like three object on the form:
A browse table with the make, model and vin
a listbox containing a variable called vc_make, showing only:
    Ford
    Mercury

    (each Make one time)

I would like another list box (variable called vc_model) showing only the models available for the chosen make in the above list box. If Ford is chosen, I want this to show in the 2nd list box:
    Mustang
    F150

and the records filtered in the browse, depending on which make and model are chosen.

If Mercury is chosen, I would like the 2nd list box to say:
    Sable
    Mountaineer
    Maurader

I cannot get the the Make nor the Model to display only unique items. Make list box shows:
    Ford
    Ford
    Ford
    Ford
    Mercury
    Mercury
    Mercury.

I am choosing compute records automatically from table, choosing the correct field, and checking "Display only unique keys."

Am I missing something? Am I doing something wrong?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

      RE:

      Jay,

this would be very easy if you break it into 3 tables:

      Mfgr
      Model
      Vin

Otherwise I fear you're looking at doing a lot of custom programming creating, scanning, and displaying arrays of field values.

display using unique values is definitely working.

i have not read the code in your question to find out what's not working for you. it would be easier if you actually posted the example add that is not working for you.

          Selwyn,

Thank you. I will break out the relevant tables and related files, zip them up, and post them later today.

          Tom,

I wanted to avoid that, but may not have that option. I will post the working model later.

RE: show only unique in list box

Attached is the zip file which contains only one form. My objective is to let the user choose a manufacturer from the top list box (each manufacturer listed only once) and have the lower list box show only the type of equipment that the chosen mfg. carries.

When this form works correctly, I will, of course, eliminate the first two columns in the browse table.

Thanks in advance for looking at this.

RE: show only unique in list box

              Hello James,

Check out the attached. I think it is doing what you want. The unique selection did not work as I would have expected. I had to put an order in and then it displayed only unique values.

The second list box was not defined to watch the variable and refresh. Also, it was bound to a table field, not the variable I think you intended to bind it to.

Anyway, with these changes it appears to work.

              Good luck,
              Jim

RE: show only unique in list box

                Jim,

That is exactly what I want. Thank you so much.

I originally had the second list box bound to the variable, but when I was trying to get it to work, I must have changed it to be bound to the field in the table.

                Thanks again.
