Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Open form with no current record

I have a form built on a single table. I would like for it to initially open up blank with no current record. The form has a variable field and when the user types an item number into the variable the form would then find and display that record for editing.

I have tried to add a filter to the form "item_number = Var-"item_search" but when I open the form I get an error "Can't use function in this contex".

Any suggestions? I'm sure this is as simple in A5 as it is in Access but it's kicking my butt.

I tried that Ken, but my table has required fields. If I added a blank record, I'd have to go back and add a lot of data checking into my other forms.

How about instead of opening the form directly, have your button open a dialog box with branching?

          Justin,

Have you tried to open the form and go straight into QBF mode?

sounds like a good idea Keith. However, that opens a dialog box. Isn't there a way to type in my own query? Or any ideas on why a simple filter doesn't work?

              I had the same problem

what I did was create the form blank then added as many variables as I had fields..

Once the user picked for exemple an order number and click on a button search, then I would fill the fields..

the user then makes changes and I would only update the fields that have changed with the info entered by th user

                Hello Justin,

Judith's reply is IMHO the best was to go, however it takes a little coding and control.

You can accomplish this type of functionality with a conditional object. I attached the customer files from the AlphaSports db with a quick crude example. But these files in any testing database and open up the ShowFiltered form. The field displayed is a variable for you to type in a last name. Doing so and pressing the enter key then displays the closest match. Blanking out the variable and pressing enter "blanks out" the form. You would probably want to do a button or some other approach to begin the lookup process again, and maybe lock the user on only one record at a time. Anyway, you can see the idea. Going at it this way, you don't have to hand code the record reading and writing.

                Good luck,
                Jim

                  Justin,

I think if you set your form to "Modeless", it will open without any records displayed.

                    Thanks Jim,
I'll have to play with it some, but I think this will do what I need to do.

If your fields only require data, Just hit the space in each required field.

Here is a simple idea for you:
create a condtional area and put your fields in it. The default part of the condtional area is blank, and the other which has the fields will be conditioned on the variable field does not=blank.
                        I like simplicity!
