Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: No Response

No, it still is not fixed.

It happens now only occasionally, because I am careful not to leave the application open when the screesaver gets invoked. If I minimize the app I have no problems. It's only when the app is maxed and the screensaver kicks in.

I took the screensaver off on of my machines and that seemed to help, but every once in awhile I get the blank screen.

I haven't had time to play with it enough. I might bring it to the Alpha meeting and possibly have one of the guys at Alpha look at it.

It's definitely a problem, because I get messages from people telling me they are experiencing the same thing. We just need to narrow it down.

I have both versions installed. Problem described only happens with Version 6.

        RE: No Response

        Hello Charlie,

Here is what I found, Screen Saver does not matter, but the "On Resume Password Protect" ... (Control, Display, Screensaver) does. When I toggle On Resume Password Protect OFF, ... no problem. Problem with this as a fix is that Management wants us to use On Resume Password Protect, so that when we step away from our computers, it will be protected.

Note this is not a problem with version 5.

        Thanks

          Charlie,

First I admire your tenacity. I brought this issue up a long time ago (right after v6 came out) and was told to update my video driver. It didn't work. I too have simply worked around the problem.

I can tell you it is not your application because it happens to me and I dont write applications. I have a couple simple databases that i work with alot. I also use XP-Home which is different than what you're using. The only common item is A5v6.

So how about it Alpha, what's the problem?

            RE: No Response

This happens to me on my server (Windows Server 2003) and on my desktop running Windows XP, but it does NOT happen on the desktops running Windows 2000.

              RE: No Response

OK, here's another small piece of info. I closed the database but left A5v6 running - no active database. The machine went to screen saver and a couple minutes later I came back and checked on it. Alpha worked fine. I was able to select and open a database. So it appears to me, in my inexpert opinion, that maybe this has to do with record locking?

                RE: No Response

                Bob,

I don't think that can be it, because I took record locking off via XP a while back (see Cal Locklin's article) and it made no difference. I think it might have to do with the background screen and the fact that XP is having trouble repainting that screen after it goes to screensaver.

I am having a similar problem with a saved style I brought over from V5. I used it with V6 and while it is working, I have found that on occasion when I start a new browse, the browse appears all in black. I then have to change the settings in order for it to work. Strange stuff!

                  RE: No Response

For me, it is not the screensaver, but the "password protect" option in CONTROL PANEL/SCREENSAVER. Whether or not I use a screensave with "password protect" turned on, the white screen and the never ending hour glass appear. When "password protect" is turned OFF, with or without a screensaver, the problem goes away. This would be an easy "fix" if I was not required (by management) to have the "password protect" turned on.

                  Thanks
                  Barry

                    RE: No Response

I checked this on my machine and confirmed it. With a database open and the password protect off, the program does not hang. So we've narrowed it to open databases with password protected screensavers.

                      RE: No Response

                      OK, another wrinkle.

I was fooling around and changed the program compatability and it had a negative impact - A5v6 would only ru under win2000. But when I changed it back, the problem went away!

So now, I'm running it in native winXP compatibility and the problem with the password protected screensaver lockup has gone away.

                          RE: No Response

I agree with bob, I have also been having this problem scince installing V6, and have looked at many of the ways around it but these are no good if you want to provide your software to third parties. You can't have them all doing work arounds to get your software to work it is not very credulous.

The problem has to lie with version 6, and the lack of comments in this thread from the guys at Alpha makes it look as the don't have the answer either.

Hopefully soon there will be a build version that eradicates this obvious bug in the system
