Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    "C" means character only?

    Numeric Value = LOOKUPN( Match_Type as C, Key_Value as C, Lookup_Expression as C, Lookup_Table as C, Index_Name as C )

In this expression, does the "Key_Value as C"

mean that this value must be a character and not a number?

    Thanks

    RE:

    Bill,

That is correct. An index key could be internally stored as a character, date or numeric. To reference those, depending on the function, could be potentially different formats that are converted to a key.

So 12345 or "12345" could be used to look up the index key depending on how the function was made. If it was looking up into a "Numeric" type index, one would assume you would need the value as a numeric key. However, the lookupn function clearly requires a character type. Whether it will look up "12345" into an index whose expression evaluates to a number, I can't tell you, as I am on the road and don't have access to A5. But you can try it in the interactive code window and see what works. Alternatively (and probably better), change your numeric index key into a character type like LTRIM(STR(numeric_value_expression)), and do the same in the key field of the lookupn

    Ira

      Thanks Ira,
No it doesn't work with a number and I wanted to be sure that was the design. The problem I'm having is auto incrementing a character field after it gets to 9, it increments to 90000000. I wanted to change it to a number field but then none of my lookups work. I then seeded the field with "00000001" and auto increment works as I expect. But the second table from which I am trying to do the lookup now requires the entire 00000001 to be entered for a match.

        LOOKUPN()

        Bill,

        I created a "Transactions" table.
        Code:
        Structure:

        Cust_num, N, 7
        Trans_Date, D
        Trans_Amount, N, 10, 2

I put two records in it:

        Cust_Num Trans_Date Trans_Amount
             101 01/01/2004 100
             102 02/01/2004 75

I then defined an ascending index on the Cust_Num
        field and called it ByCust_Num.

Here's the lookupn() sequence to retrieve
the Trans_amount when the lookup search key
        is a numeric value (101).

        dim c_num as N
        c_num = 101
        ?lookupn("F",c_num,"Trans_amount","Transactions","ByCust_Num")
        = 100
Interestingly, the second term does not have to be
enclosed in quotes and is not a Character expression.

The Code Editor autohelp description says this second
term in the argument is list is "A key value".

This differs from the "Key Value as C" which appears in
the help file (CHM). In this case I think possibly
        the help file is incorrect.

        Hope this helps.

          RE: LOOKUPN()

You're absolutely correct again Tom. Was that possibly a restricton in V5?

Anyway, a number does work, and that works for me...

            RE:

if what you are showing comes from the help file, then the help file is wrong.

if you go to the interactive window and type:

            ?function_prototype_get("lookupn")
            = "N LOOKUPN(C matchtype,A keyvalue,C result_expression,C tablename,C tagname)"

you will see that keyvalue is any type.

In the CHM of 11/23 the second argument to lookupn() is

              Key value as C

              instead of

              A Key value.

The help file has been fixed. The next versions will show that the key value does not need to be character.
