Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    SmartHeap Error

I updated to the latest releases on my laptop and started getting a SmartHeap Library error (Mem_Bad_Pointer) when loading Alpha. I uninstalled/reinstalled but continued to see the error. Uninstalled again and cleaned the registry then reinstalled and updated but still see the error. If I click on "OK" in the error messagebox Alpha continues to load and appers to run ok. If I click on "Cancel" Alpha aborts.

    Any ideas?

Yes. Search this forum. This has come up before and the solution is posted. (If you don't see it here, look in the A5V5 forum, but I think you'll find here.) -- t

Thanks Tom, I thought to search after I posted. The messages I found all indicate it's harmless but they also indicated the message was coming when shutting down Alpha. I'm seeing it on startup. Another difference in my circumstance is that I've had SP2 installed for quite awhile now with no problems. Only upon updating to the newest version did the problem arise.

And I just started getting this error message also. Hopefully the next update will resolve this issue.

For those of you that are getting this message on startup,
            What OS/SP do you have?

              RE: SmartHeap Error

After installing my new v6 today, I too have this problem upon OPENING. However, the problem only arose after I installed the latest download patch.

Also, if I press Cancel instead of Ok on the error message, I get the following error:

"Microsoft Visual Basic C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error!
              Program: C:\Program Files\A5v6\alpha5.exe
              abnormal program termination"

              I use XP home, 5.1 build 2600

                  RE: SmartHeap Error

My laptop has Win XP Home SP2. All the machines at work have Win Pro XP2 but I'm not going to install the latest Alpha update until this problem is resolved because I cannot afford to have the error at all my workstations - it will drive the users and me crazy.

For what it's worth, I rolled back to the previous version of Alpha on my laptop but continued to get the error.

Is this happening in the full version or the runtime or both?

This is happening with the full version on my laptop. I haven't tried it with runtime.

                            Aaron,

I too, started getting this error after installing 1544_2028. This is on a P-III/1.0GHz Notebook with 512MB RAM and WinXP-Pro with SP1 (actually I believe it is 1a).

                            Regards,
